Springs Fire Department as a firefighter on FEBRUARY 15, 1981
and rose steadily through the ranks to become FIRE BATTALION
CHIEF[IRAINING OFFICER in 2004; and
WHEREAS, Martz has dutifully served 30 years as the
Department's official prankster, going to elaborate lengths to surprise,
shock and deliver humor to everyone along with his best friend, fellow
battalion chief and fellow prankster, Jon Merriam; and
WHEREAS, between pranks and parties, Martz has also been a
Firefighter, Engineer, Fire Inspector, Captain, Battalion Chief and
Training Officer; and
WHEREAS, Martz did not confine himself to the City's Fire
Department - He also served as Vice President of the Riverside County
Training Officers Association; always keeping firefighter's safety and
excellent training foremost in his mind; and
WHEREAS, Marla must have set a great example at home as
well, because his two sons are following in his footsteps — Dustin, who
is already an engineer with the Palm ,Springs Fire Department and
Brandon, who is a paramedic — his goal is to eventually join his brother
in the ranks.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Stephen P. Pougnet, Mayor of the City
of Palm Springs, do hereby take pride in honoring Martz William
Avner for his many excellent accomplishments and his extraordinary
public service to our community for almost 31 years. I further wish
Martz many happy days in his well-deserved retirement with his wife,
Liz and their family.
