HomeMy WebLinkAbout7/3/2013 - STAFF REPORTS - 00 'Pro C am a ton City of Palm Springs CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, in 1949 the City fathers, led by Mayor Charlie Farrell and Councilwoman Ruth Hardy decided that the great city of Palm Springs, California needed a suitable athletic field; and WHEREAS, the City of Palm Springs did then construct and build the historic Polo Grounds, which over time became a ball field; and WHEREAS, in 1961 Gene Autry acquired an interest in the California Angels, now the Los Angeles Angels, and made Palm Springs Angel Stadium the Spring Training home for his team. This continued every year until 1992; and WHEREAS, many other minor league and farm teams came and went in the late 1990's, and the City renamed the stadium - Palm Springs Stadium; and WHEREAS, in 2003 a young man by the name of Andrew Starke arrived in Palm Springs, barely out of college, still wet behind the ears, with a grand sum of $2,000 of hard earned money in his pocket; and WHEREAS, Andrew Starke met with Palm Springs City Manager, David Ready, and advised him of his desire to start a new baseball team which was met with an extremely enthusiastic reception by the City Council of Palm Springs; and WHEREAS, Andrew Starke did then found and start the Palm Springs Power Baseball Team which took to the field among much to do and excitement and for the last 10 years has brought high quality, family friendly entertainment at a reasonable price to the Coachella Valley; and WHEREAS, the Palm Springs Power Baseball organization is now bringing its consistently winning team to the field for its . Tenth Season. NOW, therefore, I, Stephen P. Pougnet, Mayor of the City of Palm Springs, California, by the power vested in me, and on behalf of the entire City Council, on the occasion of the Palm Springs Power Baseball Organization's 101h Year Anniversary, do hereby believe it entirely appropriate that something as American as baseball, proclaim tomorrow, July 41h, 2013, our Great Country's 2371h Birthday, to also be: PALM SPRINGS POWER BASEBALL DAY
