HomeMy WebLinkAbout9/19/2012 - STAFF REPORTS - 00 WHEREAS, the United States Air Force was established as an independent military service sixty five years ago this week on the 18th of September 1947; and WHEREAS, the Palm Springs community has a longstanding historical association with the United States Air Force through the former Palm Springs Army Air Base, now known as Palm Springs International Airport and the Army Air Force operated Torney General Hospital, now known as Desert Regional Medical Center; and WHEREAS, the Palm Springs community is proud of the courageous and honorable service of the men and women of America's Air Force; and WHEREAS, Air Force Junior ROTC unit CA-943 was established 18 years ago this month at Palm Springs High School enrolling more than 100 cadets each year teaching leadership, citizenship, aerospace science, health and wellness; and WHEREAS, Air Force Junior ROTC Unit CA-943 earned the Outstanding Organization Award from the US Air Force for the 2010 school year along with earning the Distinguished Unit Award With Merit from the US Air Force for the 2011 school year; and WHEREAS, Air Force Junior ROTC Unit CA-943 earned the Distinguished Unit Award from the US Air Force for the 2012 school year placing them in the top ten percent of all AFJROTC programs; and WHEREAS, the Palm Springs High School Air Force Junior ROTC color guard, RED THUNDER, serves as the Color Guard for the City of Palm Springs, reflecting great credit upon the Junior ROTC program, Palm Springs High School and the Palm Springs community. NOW, THEREFORE, 1, STEPHEN P. POUGNET, Mayor of the City of Palm Springs, California, by the power vested in me, do hereby proclaim the week of September 16`h through September 22nd to be: AIR FORCE WEEK
