HomeMy WebLinkAbout5/16/2012 - STAFF REPORTS - 00 WHEREAS, Hanle Plante is an Emmy Award-winning journalist known throughout the state of California and beyond for his fair and balanced reporting, character and integrity; and WHEREAS, Hanle has covered California politics for three decades — most notably at KPIX (CBSS) in San Francisco, where he colorfully cornered every politician from former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor Jerry Brown, former Mayors Gavin Newsom and Willie Brown, Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, -- and many, many more! Hanle is known for his keen intellect and persistence when it comes to getting the real story; and WHEREAS, Hank's many awards have included several local and national Emmys as well as the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award — broadcasting's equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize — as part of CBSS's "AIDS Lifeline" reporting team. He has also been awarded the Pioneer Award at the GLAAD Media Awards and the James R. Harrison Award form the San Francisco AIDS Foundation; and WHERE-AS, Hank was one of the first openly gay television reporters and anchors in the country and continues to he a strong supporter of the LGBT community for which we thank him; and WHEREAS, Hanle and his partner Roger recently retired to Palm Springs and have become actively engaged in our community. Hank's work continues to appear in the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, The Desert Sun and many more — he hasn't really retired! ; and WHEREAS, Hanle will he honored next month for his incredible 35-year journalism career by the Associated Press Television & Radio Association with the prestigious Stan Chambers Award for Extraordinary Journalism; and WHEREAS, Hanle Plante's exceptional reporting about Measure J and the Palm Springs renaissance has been an incredible asset to our community when it come to educating residents about the facts. We thank him for his belief in the future of Palm Springs during this historic time in our city! NOW, THEREFORE, I, Stephen P. Pougnet, Mayor of the City of Palm Springs, California, by the power vested in me, do hereby thank Hanle Plante for his years of dedication to an extraordinary journalism career and thank him for his continued support of our Palm Springs community, and do hereby proclaim May 16, 2012 to be: I A K PL"TE DAY
