HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/7/2011 - STAFF REPORTS - 00 (4) WHEREAS, JON MERRIAM started his career with the Palm Springs Fire Department as a firefighter on SEPTEMBER 91 1983 and climbed the ladder to become FIRE BATTALION CHIEF in 2009; and WHEREAS, "the Jon's" definition of a "firefighter" encompasses so much more than actually fighting fires such as community involvement — Easter Egg Hunts, Fish Fries, station involvement such as retirement parties and practical jokes - in cahoots with his partner in crime, retiree Mark Avner - and family involvement with wife Patty and their three children Jean, David & Chris; and l WHEREAS, Jon has been the Department's SCBA Tech and has managed this program for many years - taking the lead in applying for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, which if received, will allow the Department to purchase 36 new self- contained breathing apparatus and has been the Department's Swift Water trainer and also managed the Department's Radio Program and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Program; and WHEREAS, Jon cemented his bond with his firefighter brothers with infinite hours spent serving as Secretary/Treasurer of the Firemen's Association, Treasurer of the Fire Management Unit, as a member of the Apparatus Committee, as a CPR and CERT instructor and on other committees too numerous to mention. NOW THEREFORE, I, Steve Pougnet, Mayor of the City of Palm Springs, do hereby take pride in honoring Jon Merriam, thank him for his 28 years of dedication and extraordinary public service to our community, wish him a happy and healthy retirement and proclaim the 7th day of December, 2011 to be: Jon Merriam Day
