started as a member in 1978; and
Whereas, Richard was first elected Tribal Chairman in 1984 — and has held that
important position in the Palm Springs community for more than 25 years; and
Whereas, many important Tribal and community projects in Palm Springs have
been undertaken during Richard's tenure, including the establishment of the Indian
Canyons Heritage Park, the purchase of the Spa Hotel in 1992, the addition of the Spa
Resort Casino in 1995, the opening of the new $90 million Casino in 2003 and of course
the much anticipated construction of the Belardo Bridge, slated to break ground at the
end of the month; and
Whereas, Chairman Milanovich has dedicated his time to a host of worthy causes,
he currently serves as Chairman of the Advisory Committee to the Office of Special
Trustee for the U.S. Department of the Interior and was appointed to the Native
American Stewardship Committee for the prestigious Autry National Center; and
Whereas, Chairman Milanovich is also a passionate advocate for our environment
— serving as a member of the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy, the National
Monument Advisory Board for the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument and
the Santa Rosa Scenic Area Committee; and
Whereas, Chairman Milanovich honorably served his country in the United States
Army from 1960 — 1963 and is a long-time supporter of the Palm Springs Veterans Day
Parade and our brave men and women who are fighting -- or have fought in our Armed
Forces; and;
Whereas, Chairman Milanovich and the Tribe have through the years supported a
host of Palm Springs and Coachella Valley charities and nonprofits in need of much
appreciated financial assistance; and
Whereas, Chairman Milanovich is one of the most well liked and respected
community leaders in the entire Coachella Valley, who can always be depended upon to
co-host the opening of the Palm Springs International Film Festival with the Mayor -- and
entertain everyone; and
Whereas, Chairman Richard M. Milanovich's contributions to the City of Palm
Springs and his more than 50-year perspective on our City is priceless!
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Stephen P. Pougnet, Mayor of the City of Palm Springs,
California, by the power vested in me, do hereby proclaim Saturday, October 8th, 2011
to be:
