HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/19/2011 - STAFF REPORTS - 00 (3) I a City of Palm Springs CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, AIDS Assistance Program, a non-profit organization with the goal of providing nutritional support to low-income men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS in the Greater Palm Springs area, is celebrating its 201" consecutive year of operation; and WHEREAS, in 1990, a small group of concerned citizens, led by the late Gloria Greene, Jeannette Rockefeller, and Joanna Jakway, founded the volunteer-driven organization; and WHEREAS, Joanna Jakway's role in the founding of AIDS Assistance Program has been overlooked historically; and WHEREAS, during its 20 years in the community, AIDS Assistance Program has remained dedicated to helping more than 1,750 people living with HIV/AIDS in the Greater Palm Springs area, and has distributed more than seven million dollars in direct client services; and WHEREAS, throughout its existence, AIDS Assistance Program has contributed greatly to eradicating stereotypes and myths concerning those who live with HIV/AIDS; and WHEREAS, AIDS Assistance Program wishes to "set the record straight" and recognize their often unsung hero, Palm Springs resident Joanna Jakway, in celebration of the 2011 Anniversary of the organization's founding. NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Stephen P. Pougnet, Mayor of the City of Palm Springs, California, by the power vested in me, do hereby proclaim May 7, 2011 to be: AIDS Assistance Program 20' Anniversary Joanna Jakway Day
