HomeMy WebLinkAbout4/21/2010 - STAFF REPORTS - 00 City of Palm Springs C A L I F 0 R N I A WHEREAS, Bicycling is a clean, quiet and sustainable mode of transportation; and contributes to the improvement of the air quality in Palm Springs; and WHEREAS, Bicycle transportation is an integral part of the "multi-model" transportation system planned for by federal, state, regional, and local government agencies; WHEREAS, Bicycling is an excellent source of exercise that improves the health of Palm Springs residents; and WHEREAS, Palm Springs residents, visitors and employees use bicycles for travel, pleasure, or as part of their work every day; and creating a pleasant and safe bicycle riding experience in Palm Springs is an important city priority; and WHEREAS, Bicycling is an excellent way to visit Palm Springs historic neighborhoods, parks, and scenic areas; and WHEREAS, Bicycles are used by Palm Springs Police (icers as part of their official duties; and WHEREAS, Under city regulations, bicycles are vehicles and by state law bicyclists enjoy all the rights and privileges of motorists to use the public roads; and WHEREAS, It is important to understand the importance of safe bicycle use, including the use of helmets, and strict observance of traffic laws; and WHEREAS, The month of May has been designated as National Bilge Month to promote the safe use of bicycles for community, health and fun NOT THEREFORE, I, Stephen P. Pougnet, Mayor of the City of Palm Springs, California, do hereby proc NOT 1. May 2010 shall be observed as Palm Springs Bilge Month; 2. May 2, 2010 shall be observed as Bike Palm Springs Day; 3. May 3 — 7, 2010 shall be observed as Palm Springs Bilge to Work Week; And encourage all Palm Springs residents, visitors, and employees to learn safe bicycling shills, put their hicycles in good working order, attend such festivities as may he organized, and bicycle more for transportation, recreation and health. 14 Ravin
