HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/14/2001 - STAFF REPORTS (3) DATE: November 14, 2001 TO: City Council FROM: Director of Procurement& Contracting, Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities and Police Chief APPROVE PURCHASE OF ONE (1) POLICE MOTORCYCLE RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that City Council approve the purchase of one (1) new motorcycle from Palm Springs Harley Davidson for the Palm Springs Police Department at a total cost, including tax, an allowance for the trade-in of one motorcycle and service to install emergency equipment, of $6,307.13. SUMMARY: This action would allow the Police Department to replace a motorcycle utilized in traffic enforcement activities in an efficient manner, allowing the Department to take advantage of previously established buy-back options with Palm Springs Harley Davidson. BACKGROUND: The Palm Springs Police Department utilizes motorcycles in its traffic enforcement program. Motorcycles previously purchased for the Department form Palm Springs Harley Davidson included a 2-year no-cost extended warranty and a guaranteed buy-back. One motorcycle has reached the end of its extended warranty period and the Police Department recommends its replacement. Replacement at this time allows the Department to take advantage of the buy- back option (in the amount of$8000). Expiration of the buy-back option would most likely result in lower trade-in allowances and therefore higher purchase prices for replacement vehicles. The cost of a new motorcycle is $13,647.13(before trade-in) and charges to removing and reinstalling all necessary emergency equipment amount to $660. Funds are available in Motor Vehicle Reserves, Special Equipment Account, # 5475-50015. Harold E.
