STAFF ANALYSIS:
At the March 7, 2008 City Council Priority Setting Session, sustainability was one of the
top five priorities and goals identified.
Local government is uniquely positioned to lead on these issues, and will require
investment, innovation and improvement at every level of government. In furtherance of
these goals, staff recommends that the City hire a Manager for the Office of
Sustainability for the development, implementation, monitoring and measurement of the
City's comprehensive City-wide Master Sustainability Plan.
This position which will work directly for the City Manager, and act as liaison to the
Sustainability Commission will advance the City toward becoming more
environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. Also, the Sustainability
Manager will serve as the public contact for issues and advances in sustainable
practices within City Operations and programs, while providing and facilitating
sustainability efforts between the City, stakeholders, business, residents, and regional
