HomeMy WebLinkAbout1716 - ORDINANCES - 9/19/2007 ' ORDINANCE NO. 1716 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA AMENDING SECTIONS 1.01.110, 2.04.020, AND 2.04.021 OF THE PALM SPRINGS MUNICIPAL CODE MODIFYING COMPENSATION FOR THE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL_ CHV AttorneV's summary Section 304 of the City Charter provides that the City Council establishes its salary by ordinance. City Councilmember salaries were last adjusted in June, 2000- This ordinance adjusts salary for members of the City Council to $2,433 per month and the salary of the Mayor to $3,650 per month. This ordinance also provides an adjustment every two years following a Municipal Election based on median compensation paid to council members of charter cities in the Coachella Valley. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS ORDAINS: SECTION 1. Section 1.01.110 of the Palm Springs Municipal Code is amended by ' adding in alphabetical order the following definition of "Council Median." "Council Median" means an amount equal to the median of salary paid to council members of charter cities in the Coachella Valley as of January 1 of each year immediately following a year in which a regular municipal election is conducted, rounded to the nearest one dollar. SECTION 2. Section 2.04.020 of the Palm Springs Municipal Code is amended to read: 2.04.020 Compensation of City Councilmembers. Each member of the City Council shall receive a salary of two thousand four hundred thirty-three dollars ($2,433.00) per month for each full month in office, or pro rata portion thereof for a partial month in office. On January 1st of each year following a municipal election, the salary shall be automatically adjusted to equal the Council Median. SECTION 3. Section 2.04.021 of the Palm Springs Municipal Code is amended to read: 2.04.021 Compensation for Mayor ' The Mayor shall receive a salary of three thousand six hundred fifty dollars ($3,650.00) per month for each full month in office, or pro rata portion thereof for a partial month in office. On January 1st of each year following a municipal election, the Ordinance No. 1716 Page 2 ' salary shall be automatically adjusted to equal the Council Median plus fifty percent (50%) of the Council Median. SECTION 4. If any provision, clause, sentence, or paragraph of this Ordinance, or the application thereof to any person or circumstances, shall be held invalid, such invalidity shall not affect the other provisions of this Ordinance which can be given effect without the invalid provision or application, and, to this end, the provisions of this Ordinance are hereby declared to be severable. SECTION 5. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect thirty (30) days after adoption. However, pursuant to Palm Springs City Charter Section 304, the increase in the members of the City Council and of the Mayor's compensation as provided herein shall not take effect until after the City Council declares the result of the November 6, 2007, General Municipal Election.
