Subject: Sponsorship Request from the Palm Springs High School "Spirit of
the Sands" Marching Band —Agenda Item 5C
On July 11"', Mayor Oden asked to agendize a request from the Palm Springs High
School "Spirit of the Sands" Marching Band to help underwrite two (2) community
concerts planned for the 2007-08 school year. The concerts include a tribute to the
Beatles and a concert featuring either the Tom Dorsey or the Harry James Band.
Dates for both concerts have not yet been set.
The total budget for both concerts is $13,000. Costs include $12,500 for talent and
$500 for tickets- Ticket prices will start at $25.00 per concert. It is estimated that the
concerts will draw between 700 to 1,000 participants. Because this is a fund raiser for
the Palm Springs High School Marching Band all proceeds, over costs, will be used to
purchase and repair music instruments, as well as to cover travel costs when the band
performs out of the area.
The Palm Springs High School Marching Band has requested $6,000 from the City to
support these concerts. If the City Council elects to support this request, the City will be
named title sponsor in all advertising and promotional materials. In addition, the Palm
Springs High School Marching Band has indicated a willingness to offer residents a
discount on tickets purchased by a specified date. The actual amount of this discount
and the date by which residents must purchase tickets has not been determined.
Should you have any questions concerning this request, please contact me.
