Ready, City Manager BY: Community & Economic Development Department SUMMARY This action is to inform the City Council of the Public Arts Commission's desire to relocate artwork by artist Jean Claude Farhi entitled "Machine Age" and "Le Compas de Vulcan" currently located on the median along Kirk Douglas Way, at the Palm Springs International Airport. (The proposed relocation sites are landscaped areas at the corner of Ramon Road and Kirk Douglas Way.) If the Council desires this proposal to receive further review and consideration, staff direction should include review by the Airport and Planning Commissions. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the Council receive and file the Public Arts Commission Resolution and background information regarding the proposed relocation sites, but not take action. STAFF ANALYSIS: On May 10, 2007 the Public Arts Commission voted 5/0 to approve a recommendation to relocate the artwork, entitled "Machine Age" and "Le Compas de Vulcan", by artist Jean Claude Farhi. The Commission feels that due to the prominent nature of the artwork, the sculptures need a more visible location. The artwork is currently located in the median on Kirk Douglas Way. The Commission is proposing that the two sculptures be moved to any of the following locations: 1) "MACHINE AGE" TO THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF RAMON ROAD AND KIRK DOUGLAS WAY; AND 2) "LE COMPAS DE VULCAN" TO THE NORTHT CORNER OF RAMON ROAD AND KIRK DOUGLAS WAY; bpi m 2 • E .
