AD ppLMsAR2 i c V u • C, FORS%PO CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT DATE: JUNE 6, 2007 CONSENT AGENDA SUBJECT: APPROVE PURCHASE OF 15 BEDS AND LOCKERS FOR FIRE STATION #441. FROM: David H. Ready, City Manager BY: Fire Chief SUMMARY The staffing level at the downtown Fire Station has increased from four to five firefighters per shift. This increase in staffing requires additional sleeping facilities to accommodate all of the firefighters. Complicating this task is the limited space available to add the needed beds and lockers. The proposed solution involves the replacement of the worn out beds and bulky wooden lockers with a new modular bed and locker system. This new system will provide a bed and locker for each firefighter (15 total) and create a modern aesthetically pleasing environment. RECOMMENDATION: 1. Adopt Minute Order No. , approving the purchase of a 15 unit bed and locker system from Wall Bed Systems, Inc. in an amount not to exceed $34,048.32 2. Authorize the City Manager to execute all necessary documents. STAFF ANALYSIS: With the award of the Safer Grant, firefighter staffing at Fire Station #441 has been increased. This increase requires additional beds and lockers to accommodate the additional staff. The existing furniture in the sleeping area consists of twin sized beds and hand built lockers that have been added over the years. This furniture is large and bulky, and takes up valuable floor space thus limiting the ability to find a workable solution. Various methods for adding the necessary beds and lockers were considered ITEM NO. before the determination was made that the best way to accomplish this task is to reduce the size and type of the furniture. The new furniture being proposed includes smaller space efficient lockers and pull-down "Murphy" style beds. Utilizing this style of furniture will allow for the addition of the needed lockers and beds without overcrowding the available space thus, maintaining safe ingress and egress for the firefighters. A Request for Quotation process resulted in quotations received from Wall Beds Systems Inc. ($34,048.32) and Sico America Inc. ($50,140.87). Murphy Beds, Inc. declined to submit a quotation. Staff is recommending award to Wall Beds of Wapakonet, Ohio in an amount not to exceed $34,048.32. FISCAL IMPACT: IFinance Director Review: U Funds for this purchase are available in Fire Department account #261-3600-53026, Fire Improvements, and account#001-3520-43200.
