SUMMARY: The purchase of these radios will provide the Police Department Reserve Unit with needed communications equipment. The radios are available only from Motorola and funds for their purchase have been donated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. BACKGROUND: In 1993, as part of a City-wide trunked radio communications system the Palm Springs Police Department purchased a Motorola trunked radio system and portable radios for our officers and other field personnel. (Minute Order#5233) That purchase included ten spare portable radios. With the growth of the Department all of the spare radios have been assigned to new officers leaving the Reserve Unit without radios. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has generously donated $25000 to the Department's Reserve Unit to fund the purchase of 9 radios. Our Motorola radio system is time tested and proven. It also provides an encrypted channel for enhanced security during undercover operations. Only Motorola radios will operate on our system; therefore, other manufacturers' radios cannot be considered. Funds are available in Account No. 3014-52036, Police Dept Safety Augmentation, Police Reserve Unit Account. APPROVED: C. LEE E GEL HAROLD E.
