HomeMy WebLinkAbout6/6/2001 - STAFF REPORTS (8) DATE: June 6, 2001 TO: City Council FROM: Interim Director of Aviation CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION GRANT ACCEPTANCE RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council authorize the City Manager to execute all necessary paperwork to accept a grant from the California Energy Commission in an amount up to $100,000.00. SUMMARY: The California Energy Commission recently made available approximately$38 million in grant funds as part of the "Innovative Peak Load Reduction Program." The goal of the program is to reduce peak electricity demand on the California electricity system by tapping the creativity of the private market. This action would allow the City Manager to accept the grant on behalf of the City. BACKGROUND: On April 4, 2001, the City Council authorized Siemens Building Technologies, Inc. to complete modifications to the Airport's central plant such that chilled water could be returned to the COGEN plant for thermal storage, which will allow the plant to provide adequate cooling to the various City facilities. This project is scheduled for completion within the next week. Staff is finalizing the grant application process, however it appears that as much as $80,000 of the installation cost for this project could be returned to the City. The deadline for submitting the application is June 14, 2001 and staff would like to have the support of the City Council at that time. The Airport Commission will consider this item at its regularly scheduled meeting of June 6, 2001. The attached resolution would authorize the City Manager to accept a grant totaling $100,000.
