NO PARKING AREA - TAHQUITZ CANYON WAY
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council consider a request from the Tribal Planning Director to
eliminate all on-street parking spaces on the north side of Tahquitz Canyon Way,
between Indian Canyon Drive and Calle Encilia.
SUMMARY:
The Tribal Planning Director has formally requested that the City eliminate all
Parking in front of the new Steakhouse Restaurant on the north side of Tahquitz
Canyon Way, east of Indian Canyon Drive. Municipal Code Section 12.32.080
requires City Council to pass a Resolution in order for this parking to be
eliminated.
BACKGROUND:
In October 2000, the Tribal Planning Office received a valet parking permit for the
area on the north side of Tahquitz Canyon Way, in front of their new Steakhouse
Restaurant. Subsequently, they also informally requested that the Engineering
Department eliminate all the existing parking on Tahquitz between Indian and
Encilia. The valet parking was only permitted to use 3 spaces and would only be
in effect during evening hours, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays, and
10:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. on weekends.
Since a traffic hazard does NOT exist as a result of the existing parking,
elimination of parking can only be accomplished by Council Resolution.
Currently, there is room for approximately 8 vehicles to park in this area and all
spaces are frequently taken.
The Tribal Planning Director has submitted a formal request that Council consider
elimination of all of the on-street parking on this block. Due to its heavy use, staff
does not recommend additional elimination of on-street parking spaces beyond
the 3 previously approved for valet parking.

Re: Agenda Item No. 5 — Red Curb at Spa Resort
Dear Mayor Kleindienst:
It appears by the staff report submitted to you that you did not receive
a copy of my letter to staff regarding this matter. This letter and
accompanying exhibit gives you a more thorough explanation of the
need to designate the entire frontage no parking.

RE: Red Curb at Spa Resort Casino (100 N. Indian Canyon Drive)
Dear Mr. David:
This letter is a formal request for designating additional red curb along 205
lineal feet of Tahquitz Canyon Way in front of the Spa Resort Casino. It is
my understanding that by Ordinance, unless there are traffic safety
conditions that would support this request, your department cannot act on
this request but must bring this matter to the City Council for
determination. We, hereby, respectfully request that you bring this to the
City Council for determination at this time.
Please refer to the attached exhibit. Recently, the Spa Resort Casino
opened The Steakhouse Restaurant and established, with the
authorization of the City, valet parking in front of the restaurant. It is our
position that red curbing the remaining 205 feet of Tahquitz Canyon Way
between Calle Encilia and Indian Canyon Drive will have minimal effect on
public parking, while increasing visibility and enhancing traffic safety at
this location. While this action may eliminate 7 to S public parking spaces,
the addition of valet parking at this location more than offsets this.
Additionally, you will note by the attached exhibit, that this very small strip
on the north side of Tahquitz Canyon Way is the only portion of unmarked
curb between Avenida Caballeros and Indian Canyon Drive (a distance of
/z mile).
