HomeMy WebLinkAbout1994 - MINUTES - 7/5/1994 CITY OF PALM SPRINGS CITY COUNCIL MINUTES July 5, 1994 An Adjourned Regular Meeting of the City Council of the City of Palm Springs, California,was called to order by Mayor Maryanov, in the Council Chamber, 3200 Tahquitz Canyon Way, on Wednesday, July 5, 1994, at 7:30 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Councilmembers Hodges, Scblendorf and Mayor Maryanov Absent: Councilmembers Lyons and Reller-Spurgin , The meeting was opened with the Salute to the Flag, and an invocation by Rev. T.C. Wilder, Ajalon Baptist Church. REPORT OF POSTING OF AGENDA: City Clerk reported that the agenda was posted in accordance with Council procedures on July 1, 1994. PUBLIC COMMENTS: (3-minute limit per person on matters within Council's jurisdiction) a) Eric Meeks congratulated newly elected Councilmembers, and asked that concerning the Gaming issue, consideration be given to prohibiting former employees or councihnembers from being employed by the casinos. LEGISLATIVE ACTION: 1. 1994 GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION Recommendation: That the Council declare the results of the 1994 General Municipal Election, and - special election concerning Measures R and S (utility user tax and proposed charter). Mayor toted that Ms. Reller-Spurgin underwent a medical treatment which prevented her from attending the meeting. City Clerk highlighted the results of the election, an extract of which is attached to the resolution (0$3- reciting the results,declaring Deyna L. Hodges and William Kleindienst elected to serve a teirm ending 011 December, 1997; support by the voters of an advisory vote on lire continuance of a 5% utility user ' tax; and ratification by the voters of the Charter for the City, changing i¢ from a General Law City to a Charter City. Resolution 18420, as recommended, was presented; after which, it was moved by Srhlendorf, seconded by Hodges, and unanimously carried, Lyons & Reller-Spurgin absent, that R18420 be adopted. 2. COMMENTS BY OUTGOING COUNCILMEMBER Councilmember Schlendorf thanked various people and groups for their weak over the past two plus years, and shared her perspective of the community, the Council's contribution, and her future plans. Councilmember Hodges and the Mayor expressed appreciation to Ms. Schlta dot I for her tenate, and the Mayor added that Ms. Reller-Spurgin also wished to convey hers as well. 3. SWEAR-IN NEWLY ELECTED COUNCILMEMBERS City Clerk administered the Oath of Office to Deyna Hodges and to William Kleindienst, after which (070- a Certificate of Election was presented to each, and Mr. Kleindienst took his seat with the Council. 001 4. COMMENTS BY NEWLY ELECTED COUNCILMEMBERS Councilmember Kleindienst also thanked his supporters, and spoke of his desire for the community and its future; and Councilmember Hodges thanked her supporters, and expressed her goals for the coming term. 5. OTHER COUNCIL COMMENTS ' Mayor congratulated both Ms. Hodges and Mr. Kleindienst, and expressed optimism for bringing to fruition many projects which the Council has set in place. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, Mayor declared the meeting adjourned to July 6, 1994, at 6:30 p.m., in the Council Chamber, to be followed by the regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. JU7-TrII� CH City Clerk
