HomeMy WebLinkAbout4/4/2001 - STAFF REPORTS (6) 9 DATE: April 4, 2001 TO: City Council FROM: Interim Director of Aviation AIRPORT EMERGENCY STANDBY GENERATOR ACQUISITION RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council authorize the purchase of a 1,250 kW emergency standby generator for the airport terminal facility, City Project #00-33, Airport Improvement Project (AIP) 3-06-0181-26, a federally funded project. SUMMARY: In 1999, the Airport received AIP funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)to upgrade the emergency standby generator for the terminal facility. Due to the on-going energy situation, the FAA authorized the acquisition of a 1,250 kW generator rather than the originally proposed 500 kW. The 1,250 kW generator has enough capacity to provide emergency standby power to the entire terminal facility, except for the passenger loading bridges (PLB). BACKGROUND: The existing emergency generator for the terminal facility has enough capacity for the minimum code requirements to operate a public facility(security, minimum lighting, fire alarm, etc.). With the expansion of the terminal facility, as well as any future growth, the existing generator will not meet the needs of the facility. Due to the long acquisition time for this type of equipment, it is being purchased separately from installation. The generator will be assigned for installation during an upcoming installation contract. The assignment will be brought before Council for approval at a future meeting. The emergency standby generator for the airport terminal facility, City Project#00-33 is 90%federally funded with the Airport providing the 10% match. This project bids on April 3, 2001 after a 30-day bid period. Due to the pending energy situation, staff is attempting to have the generator available prior to the peak summer months; therefore, this report is offered as a "place-holder" with additional bid tabulation information to be provided at the regularly scheduled City Council meeting of April 4, 2001.
