Re: Contribution to Tuskegee Airmen Mural Foundation
Recommendation:
It is recommended that the City Council consider making a $5,000 contribution to the
Tuskegee Airmen Mural Foundation.
Background:
The Tuskegee Airmen Mural Foundation is proposing to have a large mural on display at
the Palm Springs Air Museum. According to the Foundation's president, Dr. William
Duffy, the project's budget is $190,000. Several Coachella Valley cities have already
made contributions ranging from $1,000 to $7,000, and the City of Los Angeles
contributed $30,000. Substantial donations have also been received from Fed Ex Corp,
Union Bank and the Agua Caliente Tribe, as well as private individuals.
Since the mural is not available to the public for free viewing, Public Arts Fund monies
cannot be used for the project. Even though the Air Museum is on Airport property, the
use of Airport Fund money is precluded by FAA fules.
At the request of Councilmember Oden at the January 3, 2001 Council meeting, this item
was included in the agenda, with funding to be provided from last year's Operating Funds
surplus.
