HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/15/2000 - STAFF REPORTS (19) DATE: November 15, 2000 TO: City Council FROM: City Engineer AWARD CONTRACT FOR ASBESTOS ABATEMENT AND DEMOLITION PROJECT RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council award contract to Karcher Environmental, Inc., in the amount of $28,990.00, for the Asbestos Abatement and Demolition Project, 635 Chuckwalla Road, City Project 00-28. SUMMARY: This project carries out the Council direction in demolishing the structure at 635 Chuckwalla. This is proposed as an added starter due to a clarification from Attorney Bob King that the demolition must be completed by December 28, not just be underway by then. Therefore, the award should be made November 15 so Contractor can start in early December. BACKGROUND: This project provides for the abatement of asbestos containing materials and demolition of all structures located at 635 Chuckwalla Road. The City was granted a Court Order to demolish the abandoned buildings located on the property on September 29, 2000, and has been given ninety (90) days to complete the demolition. An asbestos investigation was performed by Infotox, Inc. Asbestos was identified in buildings on the property. Plans and specifications for asbestos abatement, to be followed by demolition, were prepared by the Engineering Department. On October 31 and November 7, 2000, the project was advertised for bids, and at 10:00 A.M. on November 14, 2000, the Procurement Division received bids from the following contractors: 1. Karcher Environmental, Inc. Anaheim, CA $28,990.00 2. Vision's West Quail Valley, CA $38,900.00 The Engineer's estimate was $20,000.00, which was based on prices previously received for demolition of other similar structures. Karcher Environmental, Inc.,the low bidder, is from Anaheim. Principals of the firm are Benjamin Karcher, President; Sloan Cooper, Vice President; and Les Winter, Chief Financial Officer.
