HomeMy WebLinkAbout19814 - RESOLUTIONS - 6/21/2000 RESOLUTION 19814 � 7,,1 OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA,RECOMMENDING DESIGNATION OF FIRE STATION #1, LOCATED AT 277 NORTH INDIAN CANYON, AS A CLASS 1 HISTORIC SITE. WHEREAS, Fire Station#1 is considered one ofthe best remaining example of an increasingly rare type of historic resource - a utilitarian, post-war modern civic building; and WHEREAS, Fire Station#1 is one of the best remaining examples of the work of a master architect, the late Albert Frey; and WHEREAS, Fire Station#1 is the best remaining, least altered Frey building in the Palm Springs downtown commercial district; and WHEREAS, Fire Station#1, given its location, is accessible to the general public and increasing numbers of visitors to Palm Springs; and WHEREAS, Fire Station #1 is important due to its association with the development of the community's commercial core area; and WHEREAS, Fire Station #1 possesses a high degree of integrity because it is still located at its original location and in its original setting; and WHEREAS, Fire Station #1 is still in its original use as a fire station; and WHEREAS, Fire Station #1 is still owned by its original owner, the City of Palm Springs; and WHEREAS,Chapter 8.05 of the Palm Springs Municipal Code allows forthe designation of historic sites; and WHEREAS, on June 21,2000,the City Council held a public hearing on said designation as a Class 1 Historic Site; and WHEREAS,thedesignation of Fire Station#1 shall further the purposes and intent ofChapter8.05 and WHEREAS,the designation of Fire Station#1 shall promote the sensitive preservation of said site. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Palm Springs, California as follows: Section 1. Fire Station#1, located at 277 West Indian Canyon Drive, is designated as a Class 1 Historic Site pursuant to Chapter 8.05 of the Palm Springs Municipal Code. Section 2. No permit for the exterior alteration to Fire Station #1 may be issued without first K19814 Page 2 obtaining a Certificate of Approval from the Historic Site Preservation Board and approval of the City Council, Section 3: Designation shall not preclude the change of use of the structure as adaptive reuse ' is encouraged.
