HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/4/2000 - STAFF REPORTS (13) Date October 4, 2000 To: City Council From: City Librarian APPROVING THE PURCHASE OF NEW COMPUTER WORKSTATIONS FROM DELL COMPUTER CORPORATION VIA PARTICIPATION IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA MULTIPLE AWARD SCHEDULE (CMAS) PROGRAM RECOMMENDATION. That City Council approve the purchase of fourteen Dell OptiPlex personal computers, two printers, and one file server for Palm Springs Virtual University from Dell Computer Corporation through participation in the State of California Multiple Award Schedule (CMAS) program in the amount of$26,695. BACKGROUND: The first Library Services and Technology Act grant award (1997-98) given to Virtual University was used to purchase the equipment for what was intended to be a state-of- the-art classroom. The room was intended to be built out to include twenty-four computer workstations, and, indeed, the furniture was purchased three years ago. However, each year, the grant monies were expended on operations before the additional twelve computers could be purchased. It is fortunate that at the end of this 1999-2000 grant year, there is a balance of $28,000 which can be used for new equipment to complete the room as it was originally designed. As the first computers in VU are now three years old with 64 MB RAM, staff proposes to purchase an additional fourteen computers at the current industry standard of 128 MB RAM Twelve of these will replace the Gateways currently at the workstations, with the latter to be moved to the rear workstations already in place; one will be designated for the instructor at the front of the classroom, one of the Gateways will be used in reserve. The Information Technology Department has requested that the current server be replaced with a Dell PowerEdge 2400 to provide additional security. FISCAL IMPACT: There will be no impact on the General Fund. All purchases will be made from funding provided by the 1999 - 2000 LSTA grant and the Library Trust Fund. i b APPROVED:,— MARGAgET ROADES City Manager City Librarian ATTACHMENTS: 1.
