HomeMy WebLinkAbout18999 - RESOLUTIONS - 3/5/1997 RESOLUTION NO. 18999 OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF THE AGUA CALIENTE BAND OF CAHUILLA INDIANS MAINTAINING STATUS QUO RELATIVE TO INDIAN GAMING. , WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Palm Springs, California, believes that Indian Gaming has made and continues to make a positive contribution to the City's economy and hospitality industry and supports the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians' desire to maintain rtatus quo relative to Indian Gaming; and WHEREAS, after many years of impasse the State of California and various Indian tribes are engaged in productive negotiations over compacts to permit expanded Indian Gaming, which negotiations the City Council hopes will be successful and will be a precedent for other tribes; and WHEREAS, the U.S. Attorneys have previously withheld enforcement action but have recently indicated that enforcement action may now be taken, which enforcement action may rmtrack the current compact negotiations; and WHEREAS, it is vitally important that the current sensitive compact negotiations be allowed to proceed to completion and the U.S. Attorneys should assist in this effort by withholding any action until the negotiations are complete and current legal issues are resolved; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Palm Springs requests that. Congress intercede in said threatened actions of the United States Attorneys and cause the U.S. Attorneys to abstain from enforcement until the aforementioned negotiations with the State of California can be completed. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Palm Springs, California , does hereby request that the U.S. Attorneys continue the wise policy of abstention pending the outcome of compact negotiations, and if they fail to do so requests Congressional intervention on ]behalf of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahnilla Indians and the City of Palm Springs.
