HomeMy WebLinkAbout18679 - RESOLUTIONS - 8/2/1995 RESOLUTION NO. 18679 OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, REQUESTING THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA) TAKE ALL STEPS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE IMMEDIATE RELOCATION OF THE AIRPORT SURVEILLANCE RADAR. ' WHEREAS the Palm Springs Regional Airport is presently served by an ASR-5 (Airport Surveillance Radar) radar system owned and operated by the FAA; and WHEREAS in 1986 the FAA announced its intention to relocate the: ASR-5 as the present site provides less than optimum primary radar coverage in the Banning Pass which is one of the major airways into the Los Angeles Basin; and WHEREAS in 1991 the FAA announced "an extensive modernization program that will coincide with delivery of the ASR-8 to Palm Springs"; and WHEREAS during a recent Department of Transportation Inspector General audit series, airports were found to not be meeting their obligations to be as "self-sufficient. as possible" if they were not marketing their vacant land; and WHEREAS Palm Springs Regional Airport presently has leases pending for 32 acres of land that: will generate over one-quarter million dollars revenue per year, but, the ASR-5 protection zone does not allow the projects to proceed, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Palm Springs that the ' FAA is hereby requested to immediately begin the ASR relocation and proceed as rapidly as possible to complete the project to alleviate the safety problems and allow for vital Airport economic development to occur. ADOPTED this 2nd day of August 1995.
