HomeMy WebLinkAbout9/6/2000 - STAFF REPORTS (26) DATE: SEPTEMBER 6, 2000 TO: CITY COUNCIL FROM: DIRECTOR OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT VIA CITY MANAGER DESERT HIGHLAND UNITY CENTER RECOMMENDATION: Renaming the Desert Highland Unity Center in honor of James Jessie. BACKGROUND: James Jessie, who worked for the City of Palm Springs as an employee of the Economic Development Department at the Desert Highland Unity Center, died on Saturday, August 12, 2000, in a drowning accident while saving the life of a young boy during a City-sponsored outing at the Colorado River. The attached resolution more specifically summarizes his many contributions which directly benefitted the residents of the Desert Highland/Gateway arena and the City of Palm Springs. CITY COUNCIL ACTION: The findings in favor of the resolution are included within the recitations, followed by recommendations which include (1) providing Mr. Jessie's bereaved. family a proper copy of the Resolution and (2) in his honor, renaming the Desert Highland Unity Center to be: "The James Jessie Unity Center". TO RENAME THE DESERT HIGHLAND UNITY CENTER TO "JAMES 0. JESSIE DESERT HIGHLAND UNITY CENTER." WHEREAS, James Jessie, a lifetime resident of the City of Palm Springs, served as a mentor to many young people, was dedicated to improving the lives of the children and families within the City, and encouraged all adults to mentor youth; and WHEREAS, James Jessie was one of the first individuals to recognize the importance of the Desert Highland Unity Center in addressing other significant community concerns beyond that of providing neighborhood educational and recreational programs; and WHEREAS, because of his special gifts and attributes, James Jessie's energies helped motivate interest in and the support of many successful and needed programs for Desert Highland Gateway residents; and WHEREAS, James Jessie devoted his life to his family and his community and served as a valued employee of the City of Palm Springs; and WHEREAS, James Jessie's recent passing on August 12, 2000, while saving a child from drowning in the Colorado River is a heroic act of bravery; and WHEREAS, James Jessie's presence will be greatly missed, but his memory will forever more serve as a role model for our youth and other citizens. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Palm Springs, California, as follows: 1. The City Council extends to the members of James Jessie's family this expression of sincere regret for his loss, and the hope that they will be consoled by the memories of his fine life and achievements. 2. That a proper copy of this Resolution, endorsed by each member of the City Council and certified by the City Clerk, be respectfully transmitted to his bereaved family. 3. That in celebration of his lasting contributions to our community,the Desert Highland Unity Center be renamed in his honor to be: "James 0. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center'.
