OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM
SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, DECLARING ITS INTENT TO
REQUEST A CHANGE IN THE OFFICIAL ROUTE FOR
STATE HIGHWAY 111 ON AN INTERIM BASIS FROM
PALM CANYON DRIVE TO VISTA CHINO BETWEEN NORTH
PALM CANYON DRIVE AND GENE AUTRY TRAIL, THEN
SOUTHERLY TO EAST PALM CANYON DRIVE; ORDERING
THE FILING OF A NEGATIVE DECLARATION AND
REQUESTING THAT THE EXISTING ROUTE 111 BE
SIGNED AS THE HIGHWAY 111 BUSINESS DISTRICT
ROUTE.
WHEREAS Palm Canyon Drive through the City of Palm Springs has been
designated as State Highway 111 for many years; and
w WHEREAS development of the City's downtown has continued to
intensify along Palm Canyon Drive/State Highway 111; and
WHEREAS the function of this thoroughfare over the years has
changed from a rural characteristic to a highly urbanized area; and
WHEREAS both Caltrans and the City recognize that the state highway
designation of the downtown portion of Palm Canyon Drive no longer
meets the goal of Caltrans to move traffic efficiently nor the
City's need to create a pedestrian oriented downtown; and
1 WHEREAS the environmental assessment of this change indicates it
will not result in any significant adverse environmental impacts.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Palm Springs, California, does hereby approve as follows: 1)
changing the official route for State Highway 111 on an interim
basis from Palm Canyon Drive to Vista Chino between North Palm
Canyon Drive and Gene Autry Trail, then southerly to East Palm
Canyon Drive; 2) order the filing of a negative declaration and 3)
request the existing Route 111 be signed as the Highway 111
Business District Route. This interim designation shall remain in
place until a permanent alignment of the state highway is
implemented.
ADOPTED this 19th day of December 1990.
