HomeMy WebLinkAbout1461 - ORDINANCES - 11/17/1993 ORDINANCE NO. 1461 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, REQUESTING THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF RIVERSIDE COUNTY TO APPROVE CONSOLIDATION OF GENERALMUNICIPAL ELECTIONS WITH CERTAIN ESTABLISHED ELECTION DATES;AND ADDING SECTION 2.04.080 TO THE PALM SPRINGS MUNICIPAL CODE TO ESTABLISH GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION DATES. --------------------- BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, as follows: SECTION 1. That pursuant to Section 36503.5 of the Government Code of the State of California, the Board of Supervisors of Riverside County, based upon recommendation to it by the Registrar of Voters of Riverside County, is hereby requested to approve consolidation of the general municipal election for the City of Palm Springs with the statewide primary election June, 7, 1994, and thereafter with the statewide general election in November, odd-numbered years, commencing with the November 7, 1995 election. SECTION 2. That those city officeholders whose terms of office would have, prior to the adoption of this ordinance, expired on April 19, 1994, shall, instead, continue their offices no later than the fourth Tuesday following the June 7, 1994 statewide primary election, and until their successors are elected and qualified; and those city officeholders whose terms of office would have, prior to the adoption of this ordinance, expired on April 17, 1996, shall expire on the fourth Tuesday, following the November 7, 1995 election, until their successors are elected and qualified. SECTION 3. That terms of officeholders elected pursuant to the above provisions, shall be as follows: City officeholders elected June 7, 1994 shall serve until no later than the fourth Tuesday following the November 4, 1997 election, or until their successors are elected and qualified; and city officeholders elected November 7, 1995 shall serve until no later than the fourth Tuesday following the November 2, 1999 election. SECTION 4. Within 30 days after the Board of Supervisors approving the request for consolidation, the city clerk shall cause a notice to be mailed to all registered voters in the city informing them of the changes of election dates as specified,and of the resultant changes in terns of the elected officeholders,pursuant to Section 36503.5(e) of the Government Code of the State of California. SECTION 5. Section 2.04.080 is hereby added to Chapter 2.04 of the Palm Springs Municipal Code, to read, as follows: 2.04.080 General Municipal Elections. The Palm Springs general municipal election shall be consolidated with established election dates,beginning with the April 7, 1994 election as follows: the April, 1994 election shall be consolidated with the June, 1994 statewide primary election; the April, 1996 election shall be consolidated with the November, 1995 general election; and all subsequent elections shall be held the first Tuesday in November of odd-numbered years. SECTION 7. EFFECTIVE DATE. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect thirty (30) days after passage, but shall not be operative until the Board of Supervisors approves the request for consolidation. SECTION 4. PUBLICATION. The City Clerk is hereby ordered and directed to certify to the passage of this ordinance, and to cause the same or a summary thereof, or a display advertisement, duly prepared according to law, to be published in accordance with law.
