BACKGROUND: To fulfill the Public Arts Commission's charge to enhance the environment and the unique character of Palm Springs by providing for the acquisition of quality works of art in public places, the Commission is working together with the Airport Commission to provide artwork for the pedestals around the fountain in the new terminal of the Palm Springs International Airport. Internationally-known artist and Palm Springs resident, Dale Chihuly has made available four double sets of his superb glass sculptures for placement under the airport's imposing dome around the interior fountain. These one-of-a-kind masterpieces become the crowning jewel to our airport's magnificent gateway entrance to Palm Springs world-class destination resort. Total cost to purchase all four sets including installation, lighting and protective cases would be$300,000. This is a discounted price from a $475,000 value placed on the pieces by the artist. The Agreement is to purchase two sets now for$150,000 with the option to purchase an additional two sets if funds are raised from donations. With the understanding that funding for this project will primarily come from donations, the artist has agreed to installment payments over a one-year period for the first two sets, with an option to purchase the remaining two sets within two years should funds become available. Airport construction funds were set aside for purchase of artwork for the pedestals around the fountain. The initial deposit of $80,000 will come from the Airport Operations Public Art Account#415-6200-56034. A second payment of $70,000 will be due in one year. The Arts Commission will fund-raise for the $70,000, but will commit to making the payment from the Public Art Fund (acct# 150-4408-50015) should insufficient funds be raised by the one-year deadline. The Arts Commission is in the process of setting up a highly-organized and committed Blue Ribbon fund-raising committee and anticipates no problem in raising sufficient funds to purchase all four pieces within the given time frame. No General Fund money will be used for this project. ,.3DP Arts Administrator -Dili ecto%f; conomic Ae APPROVi Gager Attachments: IrEVIM BY Kn OF FIWCE 1) Proposed Minute Order 2) Depiction of Art at the Site 4 PF"" k a •' ` y r r a , AM `7 7 M Photographic rendering of Palm Springs International Airport interior fountain area depicting Chihuly artwork installation. 3v ,9 3 MINUTE ORDER APPROVING THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY AND CHIHULY, INC.
