RECOMMENDATION:
That City Council authorize an internal fund transfer from the Community Promotion Fund's
Amateur Softball Tournament Account in the amount of$50,000 and allocate these funds to the
Palm Springs Youth Center for operation of the Palm Springs Boxing Club.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Palm Springs'Recreation Division hasthe unique responsibility of providing worthwhile
and beneficial recreational activities to the wide array of social groups within our local community.
There is no group more deserving of the division's attention than that of the local youth population.
Support of youth activities and organizations is of high priority to the staff, commission, and
volunteers in the Recreation Division and is evidenced by the majority of youth-oriented programs
offered through the division.
Aside from the Clty's Recreation Division, the Palm Springs Youth Center is the second largest
provider of youth-oriented activities within the community. The Recreation Division Is in the
process.of finalizing an agreement with the assistance of the City Attorney and the youth center
for operation of the Palm Springs Boxing Club. In existence since 1995, the bo)dng dub was
previously operated by O.J.Couture.Mr.Couture passed away in 1998,leaving the boxing dub
absent of a program advocate and without direction.Palm Springs Youth Center staff approached
the City of Palm Springs with an Interest in providing the needed leadership to the bo)dng dub for
Its operation and a desire to reestablish the various boxing programs previously offered atthe dub.
The proposed agreement and requested funding will enable the youth Center to increase its
diversity of youth programs, especially those beneficial to youth considered to be at Ask within the
community. Based upon this, the Recreation Division is supportive of developing an agreement
and this one-time allocation of funds to the Palm Springs Youth Center for operation of the Palm
Springs Boxing Club on behalf of the Parks and Recmatjj Division of the City.
