RECYCLING
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City of Palm Springs authorize submittal of a Funding Request Form to the
Department of Conservation's Division of Recycling and authorize the City Manager to
execute all necessary documents.
BACKGROUND:
In 1986, the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act was
adopted, with the Department of Conservation's Division of Recycling in charge of the
program. Pursuant to Section 14581 (a)(4)(A) of the Act, $10,500,000 is required to be
distributed to eligible cities and counties for beverage container recycling and litter
cleanup activities. Each city may receive a minimum of$5,000 or an amount calculated
by the Division, per capita based, whichever is greater. The City of Palm Springs has
been allocated $12,540 and is required to submit a request for funding no later than
May 31, 2000.
The City will be putting a great deal of emphasis on beverage container recycling at our
various special events including: Villagefest, Bike Weekend, parades, New Year's Eve
celebration and other special events throughout the year. Our focus will be on
supplying recycling containers and information to the public emphasizing the importance
of recycling, particularly plastics.
