Re: July 22nd 2025 Planning Commission Meeting regarding the Palm Springs Surf Club.
We are currently part time residents at 1936 S Birdie Way in the Tahquitz Creek neighborhood. We purchased our home in Palm Springs in 2021 as our quiet
escape from Los Angeles, and future full time residence. Following in the footsteps of countless Angelenos through history, we were seeking the peace and solace
that Palm Springs has always been known for.
When looking for our home, we considered many neighborhoods, eventually deciding on Tahquitz Creek largely due to its distance from the downtown Palm
Springs party crowds, and quiet seclusion from the major festivals and events. It allowed us to enjoy everything Palm Springs has to offer, and to also return to
our quiet neighborhood to relax.
Since the opening of the Palm Springs Surf Club that quiet seclusion has all but vanished. Every few minutes for the entirety of the day, the machine noise from
the wave generator is audible, even over the sound of arriving and departing aircraft. If I were to play music that is loud enough to mask the machine noise, I
would be in violation of Palm Springs noise ordinances. It’s as if we have a fleet of semi-trucks idling nearby constantly and revving every few minutes. The
quiet peace of our backyard is gone.
Additionally, currently being part-time residents, holiday weekends are our most frequent time to visit our home in Tahquitz Creek and to entertain guests from
out of town. Since the establishment of the Palm Springs Surf Club, these weekends are now spent with our home rumbling from the bass of a nearby
concert/festival accompanied by screams and yells from crowds in attendance that drown out any amount of quiet we can achieve indoors or outdoors. There is
no amount of mitigation I can do in my home to avoid the extremely loud and powerful sound coming from their outdoor concerts and events.
My partner is a well known Astronomer and for a brief time we enjoyed stargazing from our backyard in Tahquitz Creek. Since the opening of the Palm Springs
Surf Club many of the stars are now drowned out by bright lighting from the PSSC. The amount of light pollution in our neighborhood has massively increased.
There were clear concerns raised about the location, noise level, and light pollution of the PSSC prior to construction even beginning. In a city that so highly
values the quiet peace of the desert, it seems as though Tahquitz Creek neighborhood has been left out of that vision, and the PSSC has been given special
exception above any other businesses or homes in Palm Springs to be as loud as they please. We had felt somewhat abandoned by the city, but are so thankful and
optimistic about your willingness to hear from members of the community about this issue.
We had every intention of making this our future forever home, to eventually become full-time PS residents. We love Palm Springs and have many friends here,
but the location and continued noise of the PSSC has us seriously reconsidering our plan to move in full time. We no longer have the quiet place in the desert we
dreamed of and briefly had, and may need to look into other desert cities if the PSSC continues the extreme noise and light pollution without serious mitigation.
Thank you again for your time and attention to this ongoing issue.
Sincerely,
-Adam Silver
