Subcommittee Meeting Goal :
Facilitating resident participation in waste -reduction
Summary:
Sustainability Subcommittee Chair Comments
Staff Comments/Reports
• Staff working with Parks & Rec coordinating inter dept workshop to discuss reducing pesticide use and re ducing waste
materials. Work on going good communication and cooperation with city other departments
• Shredding Event – Next event scheduled for October 18 th.
•
Turf and Water Updates –
• Work in progress Staff Meeting with Turf and Water regarding the turf conversion at E. San Rafael Drive,
working to reach out to local neighbors and finalizing budget. Trees were removed in the area to avoid power
lines and staff will be looking at planting appropriate types of repl acement trees .
• Staff focusing efforts on non -functional turf rule meaning. DWA is working with HOA’s to meet new State mandates.
• Staff summer project to map existing non -functional turf areas of the city. The focus of the survey will be city
owned parks, airport, city owned properties. Up date commission in the fall .

Alternative Recycling – Vice Chair Rottner
The subcommittee discussed existing options that a re available to the community that divert and reuse /donate existing products, in
addition to the work that PSDS currently does.
The goal of the discussion is to help bring an awareness to the various options that are available to the community.
A small list of options listed below:
Chair Clark mentioned a local company called Eco Culture Manufacturing that utilized solar energy, gray water and nanotechnology
water filtration in garment making process.
Commissioner Boyed mentioned there are many clothing rental companies where individuals can rent clothing vs purchasing .
Question/Goal is to how to best share this information and promote local business.
List of organizations listed below with a short summary of what the do and the cost to participate in their programs
Ridwell
Paid Service to collect and recycle - Fee Based $18 per month
What they Take:
• Soft Plastics
• Multi-layer plastics
• Prescription Pill Bottles
Solution: Ridwell partners with:
ByFusion Global Inc (Building blocks)
Hydroblox, Inc. (Decking material)
Sneaker Impact
Fee for postage: Will ship individual bags for free (minimum 5 pairs of shoes)
Donates shoes that are in good condition. Shoes are sorted, and those that are in good condition or need minor repairs are re used.
End-of-life shoes are deconstructed, and shoe material is sold and reused to make new shoes and products .
Nespresso
• Provides free bags to ship used aluminum coffee pods.
• Recycled back into coffee pods; 85% of pods are recycled aluminum.
• Take back old machines for recycling.
Retold
• Fee -based textile recycler - $16 per 5 lb bag.
• High-quality items are sent to be reused, while other things like scraps are passed on to recyclers to be processed into raw
materials. This sorting process ensures that your textiles are diverted from landfills and instead contribute to a more
sustainable cycle of reuse and recycling, helping us to minimize waste and promote a circular economy .
