It's an Infection that affects your child's respiratory tract. This includes their nose, throat, windpipe, and lungs. The flu is contagious. This means it spreads easlly from person to person. It causes symptoms that are like a cold. It can also cause a high fever and body aches. What are the causes? The flu Is caused by the influenza virus. Your child can get the virus by: • Breathing in droplets that are In the air after an infected person coughs or sneezes. • Touching something that has the virus on It and then touching their mouth, nose, or eyes. What i.ncreases the risk? Your child may be more likely to get the flu if: • They don't wash their hands often. • They1re near a lot of people during cold and nu season. • They touch their mouth, eyes, or nose without flrst washing their hands. • They don 1t get a flu shot each year. Your child may also be more at risk for the flu and serious problems, such as a lung infection called pneumonia, if: • Their Immune system is weak. The immune system is the body1s defense system. • lhey have a long-term, or chronfc, condition, such as: " A liver or kidney disorder. 0 Diabetes. 0 Asthma. 0 Anemia. This is when your child doesn't have enough red blood cells In their body. • Your child is very overweight. What are the signs or symptoms? Flu symptoms often start all of a sudden. They may last 4-14 days. Symptoms may depend on your child's age. They may include: • Fever and chllls. • ~eadaches, body aches, or muscle aches. • Sore throat. 02(N) Page 3 of 16 Item 6 - Page 4 Discharge Instructions Document • Cough. • Runny or stuffy nose. • Chest discomfort. • Not wanting to eat as much as normal. • Feeling weak or tired. • Feeling dizzy. • Nausea or vomiting. How is this diagnosed? The flu may be diagnosed based on your chlld's symptoms and meclical history. Your child may also have a physical exam. A swab may be taken from your child's nose or throat and tested for the virus. How is this treated? If the flu. Is found early, your child can be treated with antMral medicine. This may be given by mouth or through an r.v. It can help your child feel less sick and get better faster. The flu often goes away on its own. If your child has very bad symptoms or new problems caused by the flu, they may need to be treated in a hospital. Follow these instructions at home: Medicines • Give your child medicines only as told by your chfld's health care provider. • Do not give your child aspirin. Aspirin Is linked to Reye's syndrome In children. Eating and drinking • Give your child enough fluid to keep their pee pale yellow. • Your child should drink clear fluids. These include water, Ice pops that are low in calories, and fruit juice with water added to it. 0 Have your child drink slowly and in small amounts. 0 Try to slowly add to how much they're drinking. • You should still breastfeed or bottle-feed your young child. 0 Do this In small amounts and often. 0 Slowly increase how much you give them. 0 Do not give extra water to your Infant. • Glve your child an oral rehydration solution (ORS), if told. It's a drink sold at pharmacies and stores. • Do not give your child drinks with a lot of sugar or caffeine in them. These Include sports drinks and soda. • If your child eats solid food, have them eat small amounts of soft foods every 3-4 hours. 0 Try to keep your child's diet as normal as you can. 0 Avoid spicy and fatty foods. .N) Page4 of 16 Item 6 - Page 5 -------------------------------------- Discharge Instructions Document Activity • Have your child rest as needed. Have them get lots of sleep. • Keep your child home from work, school, or daycare. 0 You can take them to a medical visit with a provider. 0 Do not have your child leave home for other reasons until ttleir fever has been gone for 24 hours without the use of medicine. General instructions -~ • Have your child: 0 Cover their mouth and nose when they cough or sneeze. 02(N) 0 Wash their hands with soap and water often and for at least 20 seconds. It's extra impo~nt for them to do so after they cough or sneeze. If they can't use soap and water, have them use hand sanitizer. • Use a cool mist humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home. This can make It easier for your child to breathe. You should also clean the humidifier every day. To do so: 0 Empty the water. 0 Pour clean water In. • If your child Is young and can't blow their nose well, use a bulb syringe to suction mucus out of their nose. How is this prevented? Ask your child's provider wnen your child should get a flu shot. • Have your child stay away from people who are sick during fall and winter. Fall and wlnter are cold and flu season. Contact a health care provider if: • Your child gets new symptoms. • Your child starts to have more mucus. • Your dllld has: 0 Ear pain. • Chest pain. 0 Watery poop. This is also called diarrhea. " A fever. 0 A cough that gets worse. <> Nausea. o Vomiting. • Your child Isn't drinking enough fluids. Get help right away if: • Your child has trouble breathing. • Your chlld starts to breathe quickly. • Your child's skin or nails tum blue. • You can't wake your child. • Your child gets a headache all of a sudden. • Your child vomits each time they eat or drink. • Your child has very bad pain or stiffness In their neck. • Your child Is younger than 3 months old and has a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. These symptoms may be an emergency. Do not wait to see if the symptoms will go away. call 911 right away. Rhabdomyolysis Rhabdomyolysls Is a condition that happens when muscle cells break down and release substances into the blood that can damage the kidneys. This condll:Jon happens because of damage to the muscles that move bones (skeletal muscles). When the skeletal muscles are damaged, substances inside the muscle cells go into the blood. One of these substances is a protein called myoglobin. Page6 of 16 Item 6 - Page 7 Item 6 - Page 8 Discharge Instructions Document Symptoms of the disease • '-02(N) Symptoms of this condition vary. Some people have very few symptoms and other people have many symptoms. Common symptoms Include: • Muscle pain and swelilng. • Weak muscles. • Dark urine. • Feeling weak and tired. Other symptoms Include: • Nausea and vomiting. • A fever. • Pain In the abdomen. • Pain in the joints. Complications from the disease Complications from this condition Include: • A heart rhythm that Is not normal (arrhythmia). • Seizures. • Not urinating enough because of kidney failure. • Very low blood pressure (hypotenslon) and shock. Signs of shock include dizziness, blurry vision, and clammy skin. • Bleeding that Is hard to stop or control. • Compartment syndrome. This Is when there is too much pressure in the space surrounding muscles. How is this diagnosed? This condition is diagnosed based on: • Your symptoms and medical history. • A physical exam. • Tests, lncludlng: 0 Blood tests. 0 Urine tests to check for myoglobin. You may also have other tests to check for causes of muscle damage and to check for complications. How is this treated? Page 8 of16 Item 6 - Page 9 Discharge Instructions Document !(N) This condition may be treated with: • Fluids and medicines given through an IV that is Inserted Into one of your velns. • Medicines to lower acidosis or to restore the balance of electrolytes in your blood. • Hemodlalysis. This treatment uses an artificial kidney machine to filter your blood while you recover. You may have this if other treatments are not helping. Follow these instn.tdions at home: Activity • Rest at home as told by your health care provider. • Return to your normal activities as told by your health care provider. Ask your health care provider what activities are safe for you. • Do not do activities that take a lot of effort. Ask your health care provider what level of exercise Is safe for you. Alcohol use • Do not drink alcohol if: 0 Your health rare provider tells you not to drink. 0 You are pregnant, may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant. • If you drink alcohol: 0 Umit how much you use to: • 0-1 drink a day for women. • 0-2 drinks a day for men. 0 Be aware of how much alcohol is In your drink. In the U.S., one drink equals one 12 oz bottle of beer (355 ml), one 5 oz glass of wine (148 ml), or one 1 ½ oz glass of hard liquor (44 mL). General instructions C S • Take over-the-counter and prescription medicines only as told by your health care provider. • Drink enough fluid to keep your urine pale yellow. • Do not use drugs. • If you are having problems with drug or alcohol use, ask your health care provider for help. Contact a health care provider if: • You start having symptoms of this condition after treatment. Get help right away if you: • Have a seizure. • Bleed easily or cannot control bleedlng. • c.annot urinate. • Have chest pain. • Have trouble breathing. These symptoms may represent a serious problem that Is an emergency. Do not wait to see If the symptoms will go away. Get medical help right away. Call your local emergency services (911 In the U.S.). Do not drive yourself to the hospital. If it is almost time for the next dose, do not take the missed dose. Return to your normal schedule. Do not take 2 doses at one time. Drug Interactions can change how medicines work or Increase risk for side effects. Tell your health care providers about all medicines taken. Include prescription and over~the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal medicines. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist before starting or stopping any medicine. Keep using this medicine for the full number of days that It Is prescribed. Do not stop the medicine even if you start to feel better. If you have diabetes and use urine glucose tests, this medicine may cause Incorrect results.
