Dear City of Palm Springs,
I am writing to urge the city to dedicate increased funding to the Parks and Recreation
Department to implement the standards of preventative maintenance, enhanced safety
measures and community driven reporting outlined in the Master Plan.
Palm Springs has a significant need to invest in its parks, consistent with its status as a
world class city. For our communities to thrive we need to prioritize these public spaces
and ensure they are usable, clean and safe for everyone to ensure quality of life for
citizens of all ages.
We need our parks to have usable, clean bathrooms that offer safe public spaces and
follow local and state-wide protocols for achieving hygiene, e.g. soap in all of the
bathrooms to facilitate handwashing; regular maintenance and cleaning so that the
public can use them. We need equipment that is updated, maintained and fixed as
needed, e.g. broken and or dangerous equipment that is immediately replaced. We need
regular clean-ups to avoid debris, trash and other hazardous materials. We need
transparency and community reporting to ensure maintenance.
Well-maintained parks are important as they can provide a sense of belonging and
encourage participation in the natural environment. They connect community members
of all ages with support, relationships and important resources that allows them to grow
and thrive. When community members feel safe, secured and supported they are able to
develop and build confidence.
Thank you for your attention to our parks and we hope you will consider increased
funding to our parks.

Dear Mayor De Harte, Mayor Pro Tem Soto, Councilmembers Ready, Bernstein, and
Garner,
As City Council considers its budget planning process for fiscal year 2025-2026, we
write in strong support of our local parks and urge the city to dedicate additional
funding to the Parks and Recreation Department, consistent with the standards of
preventative maintenance, enhanced safety measures, and community driven
reporting outlined in the Master Plan.
By way of brief background, People for Palm Springs Parks formed in 2023, and is
composed of current residents of multiple neighborhoods and districts of Palm
Springs. We are families, individuals, local business owners, entrepreneurs, and
professionals. We have lived in Palm Springs for decades–with some of us now
raising a third-generation of residents–and are robust users of our park systems.
PPSP’s goal is to advocate for improved maintenance, safety, and transparency in
our public parks. It is our position that our parks do not reflect the standards of our
world-class city, in terms of quality, functionality, and inclusivity.
During a recent April 16, 2025 “Walk the Parks” event at Sunrise Park, we were
joined by more than two dozen community members, ranging from civic leaders and
commission members to some of our city's youngest citizens. On that walk, we
requested that participants share their observations of the park. We highlight some of
the feedback on what the participants observed:
Trash in and around the play area
Limited comfortable seating and minimal shade, with lots of direct
sunlight
Green space that is under-maintained and inappropriate for desert
environments and lacks climate consciousness
A lack of directional signage and pathways leading to destinations within
the park
A downed volleyball net and lack of designated picnic or recreation areas
Roped-off construction zones and general underutilization of space
Playground shade structures in disrepair

Hazardous equipment that was improperly functioning
No nearby drinking fountains or usable bathroom
We initially began the “Walk the Parks” series as a quarterly event, but participants at
our April 16, 2025 walk strongly urged a monthly format, which we have now adopted
(weather permitting). Today, on May 14, 2025, we hosted a community clean-up
event at Ruth Hardy Park, where a similar group gathered to walk the park as well as
clean up debris, trash, and hazards around the playground and green spaces.
It is crucial for the City Council, the Parks and Recreation Department, and Public
Works to improve the maintenance, cleanliness, and safety of our existing parks and
continue to extend these standards to the new and improved parks, consistent with
what is clearly outlined in the Palm Springs Parks + Recreation Master Plan. To do
so, we strongly encourage the City Council to allocate additional funding to the Parks
and Recreation Department, so that it may continue to implement these issues, and
provide support to the new Parks and Recreation Department Director, Nicholas
Gonzales. Specifically, and as we have expressed before, our immediate goals are
as follows and track several of the Master Plan standards:
1.Create a transparent reporting process with the number of complaints, issues,
and maintenance items on deck for Public Works/Parks;
2.Define standards for cleanliness and maintenance procedures for all indoor and
outdoor recreational spaces; and publish the cleaning schedule for every park and
facility on the City’s Parks and Recreation website; and
3.Open—and maintain—all public restrooms for public use, adhering to above-
mentioned standards (including but not limited to adequate soap and sanitation to
ensure clean and healthy facilities) and provide security and external camera
monitoring as necessary to make them fully available to the public.
These immediate goals–though certainly not exhaustive–support the preventative
maintenance, enhanced safety measures, and community driven reporting outlined in
the Master Plan. We look forward to a collaborative effort to enhance the quality of
our parks for all Palm Springs residents.
Sincerely,
People for Palm Springs Parks

Mayer DeHarte, Councilmember Ready,
I recently found out that In-N-Out plans to build a new restaurant at the location formerly occupied by the
Bank of America in Smoke Tree Plaza. Personally, I'm in favor of the restaurant being built. There are far too
many empty outbuildings on East Palm Canyon and I'm glad to see another new business come to Palm
Springs.
However, I do have a real issue about the site plans as posted in the Palm Springs Post. While fixing the
frontage road problem at the Smoke Tree Drive intersection is a good thing, this access point is multiple
accidents waiting to happen - especially when cars back up into East Palm Canyon Drive. There is also a
good possibility that drivers will attempt left turns into and out of the parking lot despite the RIRO divider.
I sincerely want to see In-N-Out build a restaurant at this location; I'm sure I'll be eating there myself soon
after it opens. However, I think it would be best if no access point to the restaurant is allowed directly onto
East Palm Canyon. In-N-Out agreed to this compromise at their recently opened location on Highway 111 in
a shopping center in Rancho Mirage. I don't think it's too much to ask that they give Palm Springs the same
courtesy.

I would like to register a complaint with the city about the high-speed Japanese motorcycle owner that has recently
moved here in the last month and creates terror at 5 AM 7 AM and can be heard throughout the day from miles
away. This is just unacceptable :that someone is allowed to Break the speed limit on a regular basis. You must know
where he lives. You have to have license plate readers or some way to catch this person. I have a heart condition.
I’ve complained probably five times and it is still happening. I can’t live here with this. It’s terrorizing to me my
heart Starts palpitating for an hour. I have enough issues with my heart and my PTSD. I have developed extreme
tension, headaches, and neck and shoulder pain. I can’t relax I can’t sleep. I wake up so early can’t get back to sleep
for several hours and then I’m waking up again. What happened to Palm Springs? Are we out sacrificing our
serenity and Beauty for some jerks? Most probably they work in LA and they commute early in the morning so they
can get there on time I lived in Redondo Beach and we would hear Guy screeching by at 5 AM. Also it’s illegal. It’s
dangerous not only to everyone on the streets but to our retirees I know I am not the only person that is just
horrified, terrified and angered by this. I can’t live with this. I really cannot. It cannot be allowed please please
please please please fix it sincerely, Judith Dotson 512-949-9174. I have complained at least five times and it’s not
working. Can we outlaw loud motorcycles? We did something about it in the 80s.

Dear Brenda, or Evelyn, or colleague,
Please forward my email message to each of the City Council members.

Dear Council Members,
I write to support American Legion Post 519’s request for Measure J funds.
While I haven’t served, my husband has, my father and mother were both
in the Navy in WWII, along with an aunt and three uncles (well, one was in
the Army).
The American Legion Post in Palm Springs has such a rich history, and to
restore it to its glory would be to our little city’s advantage.
Imagine a “cut out” of Bob Hope in the broadcast booth, the ceiling
uncovered to reveal its original design, plus, plus, plus – what a draw for
Modernism Week!
The story of the renovation could well hit the national media (much like
the national media lept on the story about the Aluminaire House, which
media I think is what caused the Palm Springs Museum to be listed as one
of the top museums in the country).
Please approve the funds for the American Legion Post 519.
Thanks,
Barbara Stevenson

To whom it may concern,
My name is Rosalind Hoover and my husband and I live in the Palm Regency complex located between Tahquitz
and Amado, Hermosa and Sunrise in Palm Springs.
We very much approve that buses are used to transport attendees to the Music Festival etc.
But we not so enamored of the streams of cars traveling on Amado particularly, or the cars parking on the streets in
our neighborhoods near the Convention Center.
We wonder why the Convention Center parking lot is being used for the buses for Festivals that take place in
another community miles from here and not off of Hwy10 for example?
Thank you,
Yours Sincerely,
M. Rosalind Hoover
