To: Planning Commission Board
From: Palm Springs Architectural Alliance
Subject: Study session re proposed Nexus Twin Palms project
Dear Commissioners:
PSAA representatives attended the Twin Palms neighborhood outreach meeting on February
24, 2025 to review the proposed plans for the 62-unit project. The representatives from Nexus
provided an opportunity for input which we appreciated. At the meeting the Palm Springs
Architectural Alliance registered concerns about the design schematics being the same kind of
repetitive, generic design that has dominated recent projects in our city.
As the project is in its initial planning and review stage, this is a great opportunity to establish
with developers that our city’s slogan is, “Palm Springs, like no place else”, as we are known
internationally as having one of the most significant collections of mid-century architecture in the
world. Now is the time for the city to support, promote and demand great contemporary
architecture so that we maintain our enviable reputation.
We should demand creative architecture that is innovative and adds to our architectural
reputation. What are we building now that will be of interest to tourists, students and our
community 40 years from now? Please note that now we have several affordable housing
projects that reflect the premise that good design does not need to be more expensive. A
creative solution can be more satisfying to the architect and developer and appreciated by the
community.
Thanks your for your consideration as you review this project, and future commercial projects
that come before you.
Kind regards,
Dick Burkett
