Staff Comments/Reports
1) Shredding Event (Director McCloy)
a. Pre-shredding March 31st through April 3rd – City Hall
b. Shredding event, April 5th Convention Center at Convention Center 8:00AM -12:00PM
2) Community Clean Ups (Sr. Program Coordinator Villa)
a) Community Clean up - hosting March 29th District 2 clean up. Council Member Bernstein will
participate.
b) Time: 9-12 am Interested participants can sign up on event Brite on city website.
c) Location will be at the intersections of N. Palm Canyon Drive and Racket Club Drive
3) Earth Day Events - Planning ongoing notifications will go out separately.
4) SB 1383 (Composting) (Liz Hernandez, PSDS)
PSDS completed waste audit in a portion of the City. These audits help PSDS assist in helping businesses and
residents understand SB 1383 . Once audits are completed staff will go door to door with information and offer
training and information to help assist with compliance . PSDS will work with HOA’s in residential areas and
assist commercial businesses to improve with compliance. Many issues and challenges with obtaining
compliance. Visitors, not knowing and businesses having cross contamination from outside individuals dumping
and causing contamination. PSDS will be making a presentation to the ONE-PS organization to share results of
audits and additional information

5) Turf and Water (Director McCloy)
6) Staff Meeting with Turf and Water regarding the turf conversion at E. San Rafael Drive, more updates

7) Reuse Projects & Policies (State Landscape - Director McCloy) - No Updates
8) Extended Producer Responsibility – Director McCloy
Dir. McCloy gave a presentation update regarding Extended Producer Responsibly SB 54
The goal of this law is to have producers of packaging/materials-making producers responsible to manage
waste that is created from their products. This law shifts the responsibility away from consumers to producers
a. Requires: Recycle, reuse require recycle
b. Design to incorporate more recycled, and reusable products/materials
c. Fees generated will go to waste management companies to help manage waste
Three types of programs in place that are available to residents of Palm Springs.
a. Sharps and pharmaceuticals - Mail in and drop off
b. Used Paint
a. Paint care drop off and makes recycled paint available for sale
These items can be dropped off at the Riverside County HHW facility
Mattresses, carpet, batteries and textiles that have programs for diversion and recycling
Potential Earth Month Topic to share the current options to public
EPR - Coming Soon on 23/24 regulation
9) Food ware Ordinance
a) On going inspections, various restaurants have improved compliance.
10) Parks & Recreation Communication:
c. Parks and Recreation
Various items rekindling events with Parks and waste management
a. Workshop on waste management for earth month. Date TBD
b. New Arbor Day event – more information coming
11) Battery Recycling:
a) Staff working with PSDS with a new contract
12) Green Business Strategies: No new updates
13) ONE-PS Picnic – Scheduled for March 22nd.
a) Staff working with PSDS to create signage to identify materials being used by vendors and where used items
should be disposed.
b) Staff recruiting high school volunteers to help with public.
c) Need 1 or 2 commissioners to assist.
