ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2012-2013 As the Director of Library Services it is my honor to present to you the highlights of the past fiscal year, July 2012 to June 2013. We strive each year to offer a wide variety of quality library materials, online services, and programs. Even though we had not yet increased our library hours last fiscal year, our statistics improved in many areas. We increased the number of programs offered in the library by 26% and saw an increase in attendance of 24%. Our circulation, door count, and computer usage were about the same as the 2011-12 fiscal year but after increasing service hours July 1, 2013 we are already seeing a bump in statistics that we look forward to reporting in our next annual report. The Library is grateful to our donors over the past year, whether you put your spare change in the “fish food fund” donation box, purchased a used book from our Friends book sale, or made a general contribution. Your financial support, whether large or small makes a difference. Every quarter counts! I would like to highlight some of our donors this past year. We received a grant of $2,500 from US Bank to support Summer Reading and received two LSTA federal grants in the last fiscal year. Books4U gave us $10,000 to purchase new children’s and teen books. Our Play and Learn Island, an interactive discovery station for our children’s room is valued at $17,000. Additionally, I would like to thank our Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Palm Springs Library, and the City of Palm Springs for their advocacy and financial support. The Board of Trustees funded our Automated Materials Handling unit and associated construction costs. The Friends of the Palm Springs Library purchased new laptops for our computer classes, sponsored a large portion of our Summer Reading Program, paid for advertising to promote our programs, and funded a new book lending program, Hot off the Press, among other things. This next year will be more exciting than ever. We look forward to beginning our renovation of the Welwood Murray Memorial Library and are working to design a remodel plan for the Main Library at Sunrise. Jeannie Kays, Director of Library Services Reading Is So Delicious Summer Reading Program, beginning June 2013 We wanted to make special effort to revitalize our Summer Reading program this year. So, with the help of US Bank, we created over 6,100 two-sided, color, bilingual flyers that promoted the Library’s Summer Reading program. These flyers were distributed to all the Palm Springs Elementary, Middle, and High Schools as well as the local Private Schools. There was a program for each age group; youth, teen and adult and included a Five-Book Challenge, weekly performers and programs, weekly gifts for attendance and many other activities from a children’s garden to weekly food-themed films for adults. To encourage attendance the Library had a weekly drawings for each age group that gave out gift certificates, passes and merchandise generously provided by 28 local businesses and organizations. The Palm Springs Sustainability Commission provided the funds to purchase six bicycles to award as grand prizes; two bikes were given per age group at the finale. The program was a tremendous success and we look forward to next year! In July 2012 we began the process of converting our collection to RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification). This was a summer long process that the Library contracted with Library Systems and Services (LSSI) to install and activate the tags for each piece in our collection. This was done as one portion of the Li- brary’s conversion to our new automated system to allow an easier check-out and check-in process. In the Fall the new check-out terminals and gates were installed and the construction and reconfiguration process began in preparation for the automated return machine. The installation began in November and we continued through the end of the year. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new automated materials handling system was on January 16, 2013. Now when users return materials they are checked-in automatically at the time of re- turn; no more waiting for staff to check items in and clear their account. And checking materials out is even easier! After scanning their library card, materials are simply placed on the check-out terminal and the system reads the items and their check-out is complete! This saves staff time and allows them to better assist customers and it saves time for the users too!
