LIBRARY
STATISTICS AT-A-GLANCE
As the Director of Library Services it is my
honor to present to you the highlights of the past
fiscal year, July 2011to June 2012. We strive each
year to offer a wide variety of quality library
materials, online services, and programs. We hope
that you visited us, found what you wanted and
enjoyed our many terrific resources.
As always, I would like to thank our Library
Board of Trustees, Friends of the Palm Springs Library, and the City of
Palm Springs for their support and encouragement. The team of loyal
Library supporters makes us a better place. Our Friends of the Palm
Springs Library celebrated their 40th year of service to the library.
Congratulations to them for this tremendous accomplishment.
The Library is grateful to our donors over the past year,
whether you put your spare change in the “fish food fund” donation
box, purchased a used book from our Friends book sale, or made a
general contribution. Your financial support, whether large or small
makes a difference. Every quarter counts! I would like to extend a
special thank you to the estate of Jane A. Melcher for their generous
donation of $25,000 to the Library Trust Fund.
This next year will be more exciting than ever and we hope to
see you often at the library. Discover, Enrich, Enjoy, Connect…Make the
Library a Part of Your Life!

ANNUAL REPORT
FISCAL YEAR 2011-2012
The use of e-readers, smart phones and tablets has increased the demand for access to
eBooks to check-out from the Library. In addition to the downloadable audiobooks the
Library offered we introduced eBooks to huge success. Each month has shown an increase
in the numbers of eBooks being checked out, especially with the addition of Amazon Kindle
users. From best–sellers to classics the Library offers a wide selection of choices.
Public Events & Classes
Lectures, classes, and story times are just a few of the many types of programming the
Library creates and presents to the Public of all ages throughout the year.
Based on public input and comments, trends, and initiatives, the library staff presents
programs that educate, inform and support the life-long learning process for all.
NEW: A partnership with Eisenhower Medical Center was introduced to present a
once-a-month lecture series called Healthier Living From Head To Toe at the Library.
The PC Beyond Basic Computer Instruction classes were expanded and continue to be
popular; wait-listed each month.
The Summer Reading program was revamped to be a D-I-Y Program where students could
work at their own pace. We also added a Spring and Fall month-long reading focused
program with special activities, events and prizes to keep the emphasis on reading all
year long!
The Palm Springs Library Card gives holders access to materials and services the Library has
to offer. As of June 30, 2012 there were 18,264 active Library card holders, with over 6,000
of those signing up for a Library card during the fiscal year. While many are snow birds and
short-term visitors, most are full-time residents of Palm Springs and the surrounding cities of
Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert and others.
A Library Card allows for up to one-hour per day of FREE computer usage in the Library as well as checking-out
books, DVDs, CDs and more. From home, a Library Card allows access to a variety of database resources that the
Library provides on our web site. These include: HeritageQuest for Genealogy research, HelpNow providing access
to live tutors to assist with homework and test prep, JobNow that helps job seekers with their resume and inter-
viewing skills and Mango that teaches foreign languages as well as assisting English-as-a-Second-Language
learners. There are also resources for magazine and newspaper articles, an encyclopedia and other research tools.
