We strive each year to offer a variety of quality library materials, online services, and programs. One of the biggest changes last year was to expand our service hours from 37 hours per week to 50 hours per week. Those expanded hours included opening on Mondays and adding Wednesday evening hours. With those increased hours came an increase in library visits, items checked out and public computer sessions. The Library was awarded a $60,000 grant by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Our project, Accessing the Past Digital History Collaborative gives us the platform to build partnerships with local organizations who share a similar goal of sharing Local History with the community. We have partnered with "The Desert Sun," University of California -Riverside's California Digital Newspaper Collection, Palm Springs Historical Society, Palm Springs Air Museum, and the City of Palm Springs Planning Department to work together to share our historical archives. This past year was a year of continuing to develop community partnerships. We partnered with organizations like Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, Eisenhower Medical Center, The Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park, The Palm Springs Public Arts Commission, Office of Sustainability, James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center, and Palm Springs Animal Shelter. I would like to thank our Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Palm Springs Library, and the City of Palm Springs for their advocacy and financial support. The Board of Trustees funded design development for a library renovation plan of the Main Library. This next year will be more exciting than ever and we hope to see you often at the Library. Jeannie Kays, Director of Library Services ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2013-14 Page 2 Welwood Murray Memorial Library Construction Kick-off! On May 6, 2014 Mayor Pougnet, members of City Council and the Library Board of Trustees had a construction kick-off ceremony in celebration of the renovation beginning on the Welwood Murray Memorial Library. Interior design plans were on display, keep- ing in mind the timeless design that could represent the 1940s when the building first opened, and the functionality and technology needs of today. The Library will house three groups and serve three purposes. It will be a branch of the Palm Springs Public Library offering public computers, magazines and newspapers for the public as well as limited programming and public meeting access in the community room. The Palm Springs Historical Society will move their archives and historical research to this location and the Bureau of Tourism will offer tourist information and services. The City is excited to have this important corner of downtown reopen as it continues its revitalization of downtown. This project was sponsored and funded by the City of Palm Springs Public Arts Commission as part of their education program. Designed and created by the Palm Springs High School advanced welding class, along with their teacher Steve Fabian, they made a custom 1 4-foot bike rack that holds at least 11 bikes parallel. It was installed at the entrance of the Library in April 2014. The rack includes a mountain- scape along the top and custom palm tree end caps. The official unveiling was attended by the students and their teacher, members of the School Board and Administration, The Library Board of Trustees, members of the Public Arts Commission and Library Staff. An additional four Express Public Computers were added in April 2014 bringing the total available to eight. These computers do A -- not require a Library Card to use and are available for 15-minute sessions which allows for quick printing of boarding passes or a check of email. These are in addition to the thirty computers available for the public to use for up to an hour per day with a Library Card. The first month these new Express computers were added usage spiked 56%! That trend has continued each month with usage increasing over last year's numbers. People continue to line up at the entrance each morning, waiting to get in to use the public computers. The money to purchase these additional Express Computers, and to upgrade the existing public computers, was generously provided by Measure J funds.
