We only own 103,799 items so our library’s physical collection is work- ing hard for our community. Some people might say that no one reads but I think this number proves otherwise. So no matter how you read, electronic or physical item, we know that reading improves your life. You might not realize that we also have the following services:  Free WiFi and free WiFi printing right from your phone, tablet, or laptop. Send your printing through a portal on our website, www.palmspringslibrary.org and the printing appears here in our queue. You do not even have to be in the building to send the print job.  Accessing the Past: Digitized collections available online and include Palm Springs Telephone Directories beginning in 1938, Palm Springs High School yearbooks starting in 1939, and Desert Sun newspapers, 1934- 1989. Access is free, go to www.accessingthepast.org.  Job Now: includes resume templates and expert help, job interview coaching, and job searching, all available with your library card.  Mango Languages: features 71 language learning programs including English available with your library card. At the end of last fiscal year, we kicked off some new programs, Career Online High School and Drag Queen Story Hour. A national program, Drag Queen Story Hour is an opportunity for families to come together and enjoy stories, crafts, and a dance party with a professional drag queen. Our hostess is Bella da Ball, the City of Palm Springs’ Social Ambassador. Children and families learn that it is OK to be who you are, and that everyone is loved and accepted; the ultimate anti-bullying message! As you will read, we had an amazing lineup for our first season of Palm Springs Speaks, our speaker series. Season Two features Janet Mock, Jane Fonda, and Rick Steves. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Palm Springs Library and Palm Springs Cultural Center equally. On behalf of the Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Palm Springs Library, Palm Springs Public Library Foundation, and the Library Staff, I thank you for your continued support. We look forward to serving you in the coming years. Discover, Enrich, Enjoy, Connect…Make the Library a Part of Your Life! Jeannie Kays, Director of Library Services READING TAKES YOU EVERYWHERE Summer Reading Program 2018 Our six-week “Reading Takes You Everywhere” summer reading program once again included weekly performers and events for each age group; youth, teens, and adults. And back by popular demand for the second year we gave each child and teen a free, new book each week when they checked-in and adults received a voucher to select a gently used book from the Friends book sale shelves for their weekly check-ins. Participation in this year's program was up 34% taking us over 1,000 participants! Once again local businesses and organizations generously supported summer reading by donating gift certificates and merchandise that were given away weekly at events. The Palm Springs Sustainability Commission also donated funds to once again purchase bikes and helmets while the Friends also donated funds to purchase a selections of items all for the grand prize giveaways. Palm Springs Speaks The Library launched Career Online High School in May 2018 to help adults (age 19+) earn an accredited High School diploma online and FREE, to qualified candidates. Part of the world’s first accredited, private online school district, Career Online High School offers more than a GED, it is an accredited program that provides the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and is specifically designed to reengage adults into the education system and prepare them for entry into post- secondary career education or the workforce. Currently, more than 16% adults in the Coachella Valley lack a high school degree or equivalent. With the support of the Friends of the Palm Springs Library who paid for the initial five scholar- ships, the Library was able to apply and receive matching grants for five additional scholarships from the California State Library. At the launch of this program the Library Director presented at the ONE-PS meeting and the Sunrise Park Neighborhood Organization donated funds for one additional scholarship which was matched by the California State Library. Residents can learn more about Career Online High School at the library or by visiting the library’s website www.palmspringslibrary.org/diploma. On Sunday, October 1, 2017 the Friends of the Palm Springs Library and ONE-PS held a candidate’s forum focused on the two open seats for the Palm Springs City Council. Well over 200 people attended the free community event held at the Library. The Friends and ONE-PS solicited questions from the community for several weeks prior to the event and their question committee consolidated the responses to form concise, specific questions for the candidates to answer in a timed and moderated format. Emmy and Peabody-winning journalist Hank Plante moderated the event and he kept the Forum focused to provide the audience the opportunity to hear each candidate’s point-of-view on each topic. The forum was recorded and aired on Channel 17 as well as posted on the website. In September 2017 the Library, Friends of the Library and the Palm Springs Cultural Center announced a new speaker series named Palm Springs Speaks. This series was created with three goals in mind: We wanted to improve the life and well-being of those who live in Palm Springs and, more broadly, the Coachella Valley, by enhancing access to culture and the arts by presenting a varie- ty of speakers representing many walks of life. We also want to shine a light on the important topic of Literacy by celebrating the written word, and finally we wanted to bring a quality Speaker Series to Palm Springs. Season One included speakers Dan Savage, Vice President Al Gore, Deepak Chopra, Lisa Scottoline, Debbie S. Miller and Andy Weir. Career Online High School
