What a terrific year at the Palm Springs Public Library! Over 288,000
people visited our two Libraries, the main library at Sunrise and our Wel-
wood Murray Memorial Library in downtown Palm Springs. We had almost
8,800 people attend one of our 310 programs this past year. If you have
not been to the Library recently, we invite you to stop by or visit our web-
site, www.palmspringslibrary.org to explore our available resources.
When you think about Libraries, what do you think of? For some it is in-
formative lectures, others may think about story time or online resources,
but for most it is all about BOOKS. Our books, DVDs, music CDs, and mag-
azines circulated 431,283 times. We are extremely proud of this number.
It is always our goal to purchase items that you want to read, view, or listen
to. Feel free to offer suggestions to our Librarians if you are interested in a
particular author or subject. We are constantly updating both our physical
collection and our digital collection. We are devoted to maintaining a
world-class library collection.
Some new projects are in the queue for the coming year, from a promotion-
al program that encourages children to read 1,000 books before Kinder-
garten to a speaker series in partnership with Friends of the Palm Springs
Library and the Palm Springs Cultural Center. Stay tuned for more infor-
mation about these activities.
Our Friends of the Library believe in raising funds to sponsor literacy op-
portunities. Through grants, the Friends sponsored our Born to Read pro-
gram for newborns at Desert Regional Medical Center. Additionally, the
Friends look forward to sponsoring the Summer Reading Program every
year. The Friends agreed to sponsor the giveaway of new books each
week to every participant during our six-week Summer Reading Program.
Through a grant from the Anderson Children’s Foundation, the Friends gave
away 2,453 books to 889 children, teens, and adults. These grants, along
with your financial contributions improve our Library services tremendously.
On behalf of the Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Palm Springs
Library, Palm Springs Public Library Foundation, and the Library Staff, I
thank you for your continued support. There truly is something for everyone
at the Palm Springs Public Library.
Discover, Enrich, Enjoy, Connect…Make the Library a Part of Your Life!

READING BY DESIGN Summer Reading Program 2017
Our six-week “Reading By Design” summer reading program once again included weekly perform-
ers and events for each age group; youth, teens, and adults. However this year was all about books!
With the help of the Friends of the Palm Springs Library each child
and teen received a free, new book each week they checked-in and
adults joined in by receiving a gently used book from the Friends
book sale shelves for their weekly check-ins. Participation in this
year's program was up 34% and completions more than doubled!
Local businesses and organizations generously supported summer
reading by donating gift certificates and merchandise that were
given away weekly at events. The Palm Springs Sustainability Com-
mission once again donated funds to purchase bikes and helmets while the Friends also
donated funds to purchase a selections of items all for the grand prize giveaways.

Sun Shade and LED Sign for Library
Spike in Volunteers at Library!
The Library was excited to participate in the first Comic Con Palm Springs in
August 2016 with the support of the Friends of the Palm Springs Library. Our
booth theme was “The Book Was Better” and we had a great response. Both
staff, volunteers and members of the Library Board helped to staff our booth
all three days of the convention. We had hourly drawings, a raffle and shared information about
the library with all our booth visitors. A reported 12,490 people attended Comic Con Palm
Springs over the course of the weekend. The Library also participated in the more locally driven
Palm Springs Comic Con event in November 2016 at the Hard Rock Hotel. We kept the same
theme and connected with many attendees. These events inspired us to host our own Library
Comic Con in May 2016 where we had a cosplay costume contest, a local artist alley and much more. Over 500 people
of all ages turned out to participate in this event held in the main atrium of the Library. We see this event becoming a
regular addition to our schedule each year.
Through the generous support of
the Library Board of Trustees and
the trust fund a new permanent
sun shade canopy was installed
at the entrance of the library to
shield the automated return
equipment from the weather.
A new LED promotional sign was also
installed at the corner of Sunrise Way
and Baristo Road to promote library
programs and events. This sign gives the
library increased
visibility and is a great
way to promote our
programs, classes and events.
The Library relies on
our volunteers to help
with tasks throughout
the library. From
copying, cutting,
removing labels,
sorting DVDs, and
assisting users on the
public computers and at special events; we couldn’t
do all that we do without our volunteers! With
access to a grant funded Volunteer Match premium
account through the State Library we were able to
post volunteer notices on the national web site.
Through that tool and word-of-mouth the Library
has seen a spike in the number of people applying
to be volunteers at the library.
The Library Participates in First Annual ComicCon PS and Hosts Own Event!
