ANNUAL REPORT
FISCAL YEAR 2015-2016
100 S. Palm Canyon Drive * 760-323-8296 * www.welwoodlibrary.org
As the Director of Library Services, every year I look forward to presenting
to you the highlights of the past Fiscal Year. This year is no exception. With
a full year of operations at the reopened Welwood Murray Memorial
Library, our usage at the two locations continued to grow. Over 306,000
people visited the two libraries during the Fiscal Year 2015-2016.
In-person computer usage topped 93,600 sessions at both locations. For
the first time, we tracked Wireless Internet sessions, seeing a strong 32,111
sessions overall. Digitally, the library saw solid growth. When I began
working here four years ago, e-Book circulation was 3,395 for the year.
This year we circulated 14,200 e-Books, a 16% increase from the year
before and a 24% jump from four years ago. Our Librarians work hard
to provide a balanced collection with something for everyone.
I would like to thank our program sponsors, donors, Library Board of
Trustees, Friends of the Palm Springs Library, Palm Springs Public Library
Foundation, and the City of Palm Springs for their advocacy and financial
support. Without generous financial gifts, we would not be able to offer all
that we do. We are also grateful to our volunteers. Our volunteer program
showed an increase of 62% this year, with volunteers donating nearly
2,400 hours! Thank you for your time.
Our Friends of the Library continue to support our endeavors through
various gifts totaling $40,000 for the year. The Friends are our
cheerleaders and advocates, developing new fundraisers to bring in
additional dollars to support the Library. For the first time, the Friends
hosted a Modernism Week lecture and cocktail party fundraiser. We look
forward to a variety of future activities by the Friends, from a Modernism
Week lecture and exhibit to Bellinis, Books, and Brunch author talk.
I am very proud of the Library staff. They worked so hard this past year,
providing assistance to visitors, issuing new Library cards, helping users find
a book or electronic resource. Did you know that the Palm Springs Public
Library team offered 379 programs last Fiscal Year and issued over 4,000
new Library cards? There is truly something for everyone at the Palm
Springs Public Library. Join a book club, attend a lecture, or bring your
family to one of our youth or teen programs. Discover, Enrich, Enjoy,
Connect…Make the Library a Part of Your Life!
Jeannie Kays, Director of Library Services
READ for the WIN Summer Reading Program 2016
Our eight-week Olympic-themed program included weekly
performers and events for each age group; youth, teens, and
adults. The popular Five-Book Challenge was back for Youth
and Teens and the adults played Book Bingo. As an added
bonus the Palm Springs Sustainability Commission sponsored
the purchase and giveaway of seven bicycles with helmets
and locks. The Library held weekly drawings at events for
each age group. Winners received bags or backpacks filled
with books, gift certificates, passes, and merchandise,
generously provided by local businesses and organizations.
The Friends of the Palm Springs Library purchased three
Microsoft Surface Pro4 tablets as grand prizes.

Welwood Murray Memorial Celebrates 75th Anniversary!
‘BORN TO READ’ An Early Literacy Program
for Newborns and Parents
Grants, Gifts and Accolades
The iconic and newly reopened, Welwood Murray Memorial Library turned 75!
Celebrated on the steps of the Library with Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon,
the Library Board of Trustees, Library Director Jeannie Kays, and Palm Springs
Historical Society Director Jeri Vogelsang on February 18, 2016. The community came out in full
force as the Palm Springs High School marching band played music and the community joined in on
kazoos! A large greeting card was on display for the public to sign and add congratulations. A
commemorative tote bag was given out to the public along with cupcakes to mark this special day.
Constructed by architect John Porter Clark the Welwood Murray Memorial Library opened in 1941 as the main library
for the City. Visit www.welwoodlibrary.org for hours, events and more information.
The Friends of the Palm Springs Library, in cooper-
ation with the Palm Springs Public Library and a
local Educator created an early literacy program
to distribute a ‘Born To Read’ kit to the parents of
each baby born at Desert Regional Medical Center. Literacy
development begins at birth and is closely linked to a baby’s
earliest experiences with books and stories. Babies learn lan-
guage through social literacy experiences - parents interact-
ing with them using books. The development of our Born to
Read program began in the first quarter of 2015 with the
creation of partnerships, designing and printing the materials,
as well as various meetings with hospital personnel and stake-
holders. It was decided to distribute the kits through a third
party called Healthy Beginnings whom the hospital contracts
with to give pre-birth hospital tours and post-birth classes to
new parents. The distribution of the kits be-
gan in August 2015. The kit includes two
bilingual board books, child developmental
guidelines, a list of local resources, a bib and
information about the library and program.
