Name of Organization: Organized Neighborhoods of Palm Springs (ONEPS)
If yes, provide IRS ID#
Tell us about your project:
1.Project Name: Neighborhood Blade Signs - City Wide
2.Project Address: 1073 E. Buena Vista Drive, Palm Springs
3.Project Type: Grant
4.This project improves:
Business Community, Downtown Enhancements, Government Services, Historic
Preservation, Streets/Roads, Tourism, Other: Neighborhood identity and way-finding
5. What demographic(s) does this project serve?
Entire Palm Springs Community
6. Estimated project cost: $111,000.00
7. Short description of proposed project.
There are two dimensions to this proposal. (1) fabricating and installing
approximately 180 neighborhood blade signs on traffic light poles at major Palm
Springs intersections, and (2) ordering more neighborhood-specific blade signs so
that each of 52 neighborhoods get 10 new or 10 additional signs (total around 700).
The reason for this proposal being in two parts is that cost efficiencies are achieved
with greater quantity than dividing into two parts, which would cost more according to
our providers.

Melissa,
Thank you for the opportunity to submit additional materials. Attached you will find
four items:
A cover letter / narrative
A spreadsheet that is intended to map out the locations of new blade signs
throughout the City
Two estimates, one for sign fabrication and one for sign installation. Of note, the
estimators are City-approved contractors who are currently used to do existing work
similar to this proposal.
With thanks,
Chris Ruetz

MEASURE J Community Initiated Projects
Project:Citywide Blade Signs
Project Leader:Chris Ruetz -Chair,ONE-PS
Project Narrative
For nearly 20 years, individual Palm Springs Neighborhood Organizations (NOrgs)have invested in
metal blade signs that are mounted atop City streets signs, demarcating the boundaries of their
neighborhoods. At present there are 52 neighborhoods in Palm Springs;not all NOrgs have blade signs.
Several NOrgs that do have blade signs have noticed that their signs have faded from hot summer
sunlight and have requested funding for replacement.
This project is intended to fill in the gaps connecting neighborhoods;major intersections that in some
cases connect as many as four individual NOrgs at each street corner.
Please review the large spreadsheet attached that maps out each and every Palm Springs intersection
where blade signs do not presently exist.
Photos or Renderings
The following photos include two signs that are already attached to traffic light poles (Upper West Side)
and a sign that is at a street corner, mounted atop City street signs (Movie Colony East). The Upper
West Side signs are representative of the additional signs that this project proposal would like to fund,
citywide.
Quotes or Estimates
Please review attached estimates provided by Palm Springs city-approved contractors who fabricate
blade signs,as well as install them on traffic light poles.Note:City engineers typically install blade signs
within NOrgs. However, given the complexity of electrified traffic light poles, the vendor included has the
training and skill to install signs on these poles.
Additional Information
This proposal is in alignment with the goals of Measure J funding as well as the City’s Strategic
Plan and departmental plans in that this project is intended to improve citywide way finding for all
who drive through Palm Springs:visitors, residents, service contractors, public safety vehicles, and
more. This project will provide a benefit to the community over a long period.
Ongoing costs are not anticipated after project funding.NOrgs currently without blade signs may
come along later requesting support and they will be included in a future funding proposal to the
Measure J Commission.
This project will make Palm Springs a safe, desirable place to live, work, and visit. As mentioned
above, persons who drive through the City of Palm Springs will be better informed as to which
neighborhood(s)they are driving through on their journey.
This project will improve public safety, especially in the event of an accident or emergency when
first-responders ask for descriptive street and neighborhood locations of incidents.
This project may promote the growth of tourism in the city especially as visitors seek to identify
neighborhoods that reflect their personal taste and architectural interests (i.e.Mid-Century Modern
in Sunrise Park and other NOrgs;Desert Spanish in Old Las Palmas and other NOrgs.)
The Project Leader (applicant)is willing to collaborate with approved contractors on the fabrication
and installation of these blade signs without need for additional City resources.
