Welcome Erin Boyd to the subcommittee and welcome back Liz Hernandez from PSDS. 2. Discussion regarding meeting time change to 1:00PM works for subcommittee. Next meeting will be February 6th. Staff Comments/Reports 1) Shredding Event (Sr. Program Coordinator Villa) a) Shredding event was held on January 11th b) Pre-shredding successfully complete January6th to the 9th. Not as many people as the last event. There were no e-waste or bulky item drop off at this event. PSDS will provide data totals at next months meeting. Staff will be scheduling the next event for April 5th. 2) Community Clean Ups (Sr. Program Coordinator Villa) 1) Community clean up scheduled for January 25th at James O Jessee. 15 people have signed up still looking for up to a total of 20 – 25 people. 2) PSDS will help out will supplies & coordination with Parks & Rec 3) Earth Day Events - Planning ongoing notifications will go out separately. 4) SB 1383 (Composting) (Liz Hernandez, PSDS) a) PSDS continuing audits for commercial and multi family b) Vacation rentals continue to improve. c) Some businesses continue to deal with outside contamination. d) School training for youth scheduling continues looking at planning events in schools, after school programs e) PSDS planning waste evaluations and be planning a 2-week audit. There are 6 routes, PSDS will assess a new section of the city on the West side. will review/assess recycling and compost. PSDS will send results of the neighborhood via letter and recommendations for improvement f) Apartments (rental) have been challenging to get information out to residents also issues with turnover and shared contamination. PSDS is happy to talk and meet with any representatives in the complex to help organize a recycling ambassador to help promote best practices. g) PSDS has visited all multi-family units and delivered green bins. h) Discussion with PSDS while there are challenges the city has been improving on best practices and diverting compost and recycling form landfill. How do we celebrate our success and get residents to continue best practices. The City is in compliance with State regulations with 50% diversion from the start and an increase of 20% to date. Palm Springs as a whole is doing well compared to other cities of similar size around the state. Businesses are also increasing diversion rates. i) Perhaps an Earth Month event or media blast sharing success rates. Or a shout out to a particular business that has done exceptionally well, or presentation to city council. 5) Turf and Water (Director McCloy) - No Updates 6) Reuse Projects & Policies (State Landscape - Director McCloy) - No Updates 7) Extended Producer Responsibility - No updates 8) Food ware Ordinance a) On going inspections, various restaurants have improved compliance. 9) Parks & Recreation Communication: Village Fest: Staff looking at opportunities to improve waste locations/signage, and proper disposal of recycling/landfill. Potential trial to color code waste items to encourage proper disposal. Staff looking at potential rebates for business that are transitioning to compostable products. Parks and Recreation continue work on the new Parks and Recreation master plan's Input form Sustainability commission regarding: 1. New waste/recycling and trash collection It was noted that the Turkey Trot race used styro-foam cups Could information be included in permit application to education event coordinators for similar events, Santa Paws 5k, Pride Run etc. 10) Battery Recycling: No new updates 11) Green Business Strategies: Staff will revisit in January 2025 12) ONE-PS Picnic – Scheduled for March 22nd. Discussion regarding having volunteers monitor waste bins, PSDS will work on additional signage to help vendors and guest identify where to place items in disposal containers. Based on the initial exercise from last years picnic the goal for this exercise was to help implement improved dis posal for all large events through out the city. Need to revisit how to promote best practices.
