Regarding. Requeafor Lateral Analysis for Carport Enclosure or 200 E. Racquerclab Drive
Dear Mr. Bittemun:
I received a set of drawings from Mr. Joel Brawn -contractor for Camino Del Sol. His drawing intend in Install garage doors into an
existing carport at 200 East Racquetclub Drive. He submitted his drawing to the plan check department and was informed by Mr. John
Shoemaker that he would need to laterally augport the open -front of the carport. I reviewed the plans of the existing building and
contacted Mr. Shoemaker on Friday. May 29 . We discussed the matter and Mr. Shoemaker requested that I submit this letter of
recommendation directly to you.
The garage is a secondary structure, which is allowed by code to be designed using methods of rotation as described in Section 2314
of the 1994 UBC. I have taken into consideration that this is an existing structure and that it conforms to code definition as a soft -
story or open -front design. The provisions of the code limit the do* of diaphragm to 25 feet or two-thirds the diaphragm width. The
drawings indicate the depth of diaphragm to be 20 feet, which are within the code limits.
Wind loading Uuft rally governs in lightweight structures such as this. The installation of a wall with lift -doors does not add or
diminish from the wind pressure applied to the building. The effects of wind create uplift on the roof diaphragm and a lateral torte
against the back wall. The end walls are already design to resist the diaphragm movement due in laterally applied wind loads. This
will not change if a new wall is added parallel to the back wall. However, uplift will be reduced when the garage doors are closed.
Therefore, the installation of a new wall of doors will improve the performance of the building It is only recommended that the wall
be constructed using the provisions of Conventional Framing in Section 2326 to assure that the wall is adequately tied to the roof
diaphragm and foundation below. This does not require the services of an Architect or Engineer.
There is no change in the transverse direction where the disphragtre is approximately 80 feet deep. It may be assumed that the depth of
the diaphragm will cause seismic loads to govern over wind in this direction. The determination of lateral load resulting from seismic
is a function of the structure weight. The lateral weight is calculated as the tributary weight of one-half the height of the two end walls
combined with the weight of the diaphragn The total weight is multiplied by the base shear factor typically taken as 0.183 or 18.3
The weight of the wall in plane with the reaction is generally ignored for determination of diaphragm shear.
The structure has been Constructed using the provisions of rotation (common with garage and other secondary structures). There to
the original design prevents the collapse of the soflatory and it is not necessary to use the new wall as a shear -resisting element. The
analysis of rotation will redistribute the diaphragm shear into the three remaining solid wall panels.
It is therefore my professional opinion that a lateral analysis and that a need for lateral restraints upon the open side of this structure is

Permit holder hereby agrees to indemnify and defend the City, its officers, agents and employees
against and will hold and save each of them harmless from, any and all actions, suits, claims,
damages to persons or property losses, costs, penalties, obligations, errors, omissions or
liabilities (herein "claims or liabilities") that may be asserted or claimed by any person, firm or
entity arising out of or in connection with the location, construction, maintenance, relocation or
removal of all the work authorized by this building permit, but excluding such claims or
liabilities arising from the sole negligence or willful misconduct of the City, its officers, agents
or employees, who are directly responsible to the City and in connection therewith:
(a) Permit holder will defend any action or actions filed in connection with any
of said claims or liabilities and will pay all costs and expenses, including legal
costs and attorneys' fees incurred in connection therewith;
(b) Permit holder will promptly pay any judgment rendered against the City, its
officers, agents or employees for any such claims or liabilities arising out of or
in connection with the work authorized by this building permit, and permit holder
agrees to save and hold the City, its officers, agents and employees harmless
therefrom;
(c) In the event the City, its officers, agents or employees is made a party to any
action or proceeding filed or prosecuted against the permit holder for such
damages or other claims arising out of the location, construction, maintenance,
relocation or removal of all work authorized by this building permit, permit
holder agrees to pay the City, its officers, agents or employees, any and all costs
and expenses incurred by the City, including, but not limited to, legal costs and
attorneys fees.
