Commissioner Erin Boyd has expressed interest in joining the subcommittee and will be joining the subcommittee in January 2025. Staff Comments/Reports 1) Shredding Event (Sr. Program Coordinator Villa) a) Next Shredding has been scheduled: 1) Pre-shredding at City Hall January 6th to January 9th 2) Shredding event January 11 at the Convention Center 3) Commission volunteers needed 2) Community Clean Ups (Sr. Program Coordinator Villa) 1) First community clean up scheduled for January 25th 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM 2) Sr. Program Coordinator Villa is working with the PS high school to coordinate student volunteers. 3) Staff goal is to cover all sections of the city throughout the year. 3) SB 1383 (Composting) (Liz Hernandez, PSDS) 1) Single Family - Progress in improving Residential compliance. PSDS submitting letters to non-compliant house holds and offering education 2) Multi-Family – communication ongoing with property managers and PSDS working to get information directly to occupants in multi-family units 3) Commercial – Work is ongoing most are in compliance but there are some businesses that are not in compliance PSDS have been in contact, Businesses. PSDS will be submitting a list to Dir. McCloy of the business that continue to be out of compliance that continue to cross contaminate and staff to discuss next steps. 4) PSDS will be providing education events to local schools, once complete PSDS will complete and audit to see how students/school improves 5) PSDS will be completing waste evaluations in January 2025. Goal is to assess how permanent residents are doing. The North side of Palm Springs has typically been a challenge, improvements have been made. 6) Liz will forward data to Director McCloy, and subcommittee would like to see the data. 4) Turf and Water (Director McCloy) - No Updates 5) Reuse Projects & Policies (State Landscape - Director McCloy) - No Updates 6) Extended Producer Responsibility - No updates 7) Food ware Ordinance Updates on final ordinance wording and being finalized and s/b ready for Commission approval and potential for a November City council meeting. 8) Parks & Recreation Communication: Village Fest: Staff looking at opportunities to improve waste locations/signage, and proper disposal of recycling/landfill. Potential trial to color code waste items to encourage proper disposal. Staff looking at potential rebates for business that are transitioning to compostable products. Parks and Recreation continue work on the new Parks and Recreation master plan's Input form Sustainability commission regarding: 1. New waste/recycling and trash collection It was noted that the Turkey Trot race used styro-foam cups Could information be included in permit application to education event coordinators for similar events, Santa Paws 5k, Pride Run etc. 9) Battery Recycling: No new updates 10) Food ware Enforcement: Assessments on going. Staff will be following up with restaurants that have made improvements and looking at ways to recognize their efforts to improve and comply with city ordinance. 11) Green Business Strategies: Staff will revisit in January 2025 The January 2025 meeting – The January meeting will be moved from January 2 nd to January 14th at 1:00PM due to holiday conflicts.
