BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES
MINUTES
Palm Springs Public Library September 27, 2018
The Learning Center
1. CALL TO ORDER
President Willison called the meeting to order at 3:09 p.m.
2. ROLL CALL PRESENT

STAFF PRESENT: Jeannie Kays, Director of Library Services.
CITY STAFF PRESENT: Lisa Brock, Library Operations and Collection Manager; Julie Warren, Library
Services and Public Relations Manager.
PUBLIC PRESENT: Michael Hirschbein.
3. POSTING OF AGENDA: Jeannie Kays reported that the agenda was posted on the Library’s website
and at City Hall on or before September 20, 2018.
4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF: The minutes of the June 28, 2018 meeting were accepted.
5. ADDED STARTERS: None
6. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None
7. TREASURER’S REPORT: Director Kays gave the report.
8. REPORT FROM FOPSL LIAISON: Michael Hirschbein gave the report. Friends are planning Modernism
Week events and planning their annual meeting. The annual meeting is March 10, 2019 at the Truman
Capote home. National Friends of Libraries week is October 21st-27th. The winner of the LeeOna Hostrop
Bookmark Contest will be announced on October 23rd at 4 pm. The Friends will set up a table in the Lobby
of the Library and have raffle drawings throughout the week. There will be a book sale on Saturday
October 27th from 10-1.
9. REPORT FROM LIBRARY FOUNDATION LIAISION
Trustee Courtright gave the report. They have three new members with two additional vacancies. The
president has resigned so they will be electing a new president.
10. ANNUAL MEETING:
MOTION: (Courtright/Dunphy, 3-0) To postpone annual meeting until the January 2019
meeting. Harry Courtright assumed role as Acting Treasurer.
11. LEGISLATIVE ACTION

11. B. Welwood Patio
The subcommittee met with the HSPB subcommittee at the Welwood Library; there is a new project
manager to help keep the project on task. There are several things the library subcommittee and
the HSPB subcommittee do not agree on. It is going to the Architecture Advisory Committee in
October. The plans will come back to the Library Board before going to City Council. Ron Willison
will remain on the Ad Hoc Patio Subcommittee Committee after his term on the Board of Trustees
ends.
11. C. Strategic Plan
Director Kays reported that we are in the process of creating a steering committee. It consists of 8-
10 people to be part of the strategic planning process. Library management had a phone
conference with the consultants from Library Strategies and will be setting a date for the steering
committee to meet.

13. REPORT FROM STAFF REPRESENTATIVE
Drag Queen Story Hour featuring Bella da Ball was September 11 at 6 pm. Will be every other
month. Next DQSH is November 20, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.
Pumpkin carving for teens: Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m.
Pumpkin carving for kids: Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m.
Palm Springs Speaks: Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally, Friday, Oct 5 at 7 pm.
Career Online High School: 10 active students, 6 scholarship openings
Palm Springs Pride Parade: Library will have an entry. Theme: Drag yourself to the library. Bella da
Ball is participating with us.
Festival of lights parade: Library will have a book cart drill team entry.

The Library received $37,676.46 refund check for our broadband project. Reimbursements take
some time. This refund was for Fiscal Year 2016-17.
Summer Reading: Beat our goal.
Signups:
Youth: 552
Teen: 169
Adults: 458
Grand Total: 1,179
We had 36 programs in total with 2,053 attendees
Book Giveaways during Summer Reading:
Youth – 1127*
Teen – 351*
Adults - 609 vouchers redeemed
*Courtesy of a Friends of the Library grant from Anderson Children’s Foundation
Trustee McBride arrived at this time.
14. TRUSTEE COMMENTS & REQUESTS
It was announced that Friends President, Jacque Wachs resigned. There was a request that Library
Staff create a certificate of appreciation for Jacque Wachs for her service as Friends President.
