CALL TO ORDER President Willison called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL PRESENT Harry Courtright Yes Ashley Dunphy Yes Linda Futterer Yes Ed McBride Yes Ron Willison Yes STAFF PRESENT: Jeannie Kays, Director of Library Services. CITY STAFF PRESENT: Lisa Brock, Library Operations and Collection Manager; Julie Warren, Library Services and Public Relations Manager. PUBLIC PRESENT: Cathy Brant, Franco Laurie, Jacque Wachs, Neil McLean, Melanie Freeland, Richard Stoner, Scott Severson, Arthur Dyson, Frank Urrutia, Kerry Parker, Jackie Vinkler 3. POSTING OF AGENDA: Director Kays reported that the agenda was posted on the Library’s website and at City Hall on or before November 9, 2017. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF: The minutes of October 26, 2017 meeting were accepted. 5. ADDED STARTERS: None 6. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None 7. TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Futterer gave the report. 9. A. moved up at this time. 9. A. Main Library Renovation Architectural Proposals Two proposals were presented to the Library Board. Neil McLean presented for Gensler and Frank Urrutia and Arthur Dyson presented for Urrutia Marks Architects and Dyson Siegrist Janzen Architects. Each was given 17 minutes for their presentation and had time for questions after. Harry Courtright left following the presentations.. 8. REPORT FROM FOPSL LIAISON: Jacque Wachs gave the report. The first Palm Springs Speaks even took place and it was a good event with a good turnout. They are bringing two more authors to the Coachella Valley: Deepak Chopra and Lisa Scottoline. More information and tickets are available at www.palmspringsspeaks.org. They are planning two Modernism Week events on February 22nd; a self- guided tour of Dr. Hugh Stephens home and a lecture by Alan Hess on Desert as Muse. Their annual meeting will be at the Gloria Swanson estate on Sunday, March 25 at 2 pm. During Friends of the Librar y week the winner of the bookmark design contest was announced at an ice cream social; the Mayor attended and presented the Friends with a proclamation of merit. They also had a raffle and a book sale during the week. Board of Library Trustees Minutes: November 16, 2017 2 9. LEGISLATIVE ACTION 9. B. Welwood Patio Design Director Kays gave the report. HSPB subcommittee met and reviewed the plans and gave feedback. Franco Laurie from Public Works sent their comments to the landscape architect. The revisions will be presented to the HSPB subcommittee in December. No action at this time. The subcommittee suggested adding tortoises in the design and suggested Astroturf be put down. The subcommittee was presented with samples of different wood materials. The enclosure around the HVAC needed to be larger to ensure air is able to circulate. The designs will come back to the Library Board before going out to bid. Treasurer Futterer asked how much the City is going to be pay towards the project. No action was taken. 9. C. REPORT FROM STAFF REPRESENTATIVE  Palm Springs Speaks: 330-350 attended Dan Savage event. Very pleased with result. Next event is Deepak Chopra, Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Richards Center for the Arts at Palm Springs High School. Proceeds benefit Friends of the Palm Springs Library and Palm Springs Cultural Center equally. Everyone will get a copy of Deepak’s latest book, The Healing Self: A Revolutionary New Plan to Supercharge Your Immunity and Stay Well for Life. Book release date: Jan 30, 2018.  All Staff Day: Library was closed Friday, November 3, 2017 for our annual All Staff Day. Had an amazing experience attending one day of California Library Association’s annual conference in Riverside, CA.  Library Closed: Close at 6 p.m. November 22. Closed November 23 and 24 for Thanksgiving; December 25 and 26 for Christmas.  Welwood Murray Memorial Library: Closed November 23 for Thanksgiving and December 25 for Christmas.  Santa and Mrs. Claus Open House: Wednesday, December 6. This year Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for photographs 4:00 p.m . - 8:00 p.m. Bring your cameras. Crafts will be available while you wait or after you visit.  Decorating the Library for the Holidays: Thursday, November 30. 8:00 a.m. Always looking for volunteers to help.  Volunteer Holiday Party: Tuesday, December 19 3:30 p.m. The Learning Center at the library. TRUSTEE COMMENTS & REQUESTS President pro tem Dunphy complimented the Halloween program at the Library. Trustee McBride complimented the Palm Springs Speaks program. President Willison thanked the library staff and volunteers that helped out at Palm Springs Speaks. 14.
