CALL TO ORDER President Courtright called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL PRESENT Harry Courtright Yes Linda Futterer Yes Ashley Dunphy Yes Ron Willison Yes Ed McBride No STAFF PRESENT: Jeannie Kays, Director of Library Services. CITY STAFF PRESENT: Lisa Brock, Library Operations and Collection Manager; Julie Warren, Library Services and Public Relations Manager. PUBLIC PRESENT: Milt Levinson 3. POSTING OF AGENDA: Director Kays reported that the agenda was posted on the Library’s website and at City Hall on or before January 19, 2017. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF: MOTION: (Futterer/Willison, 4-0) To approve minutes of the November 17, 2016 meeting. 5. ADDED STARTERS: President Pro Tem Willison suggested the Library Board purchase tickets for Library staff to attend Foundation event February 8, 2017. MOTION: (Willison/Dunphy, 4-0) To approve up to $1,000 for purchase of tickets for staff. 6. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None. 7. TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Futterer gave the report. 8. REPORT FROM FOPSL LIAISON: Milt Levinson gave the report. On January 28th the Friends are hosting Bellinis, Brunch, and Books with author Jacquelyn Mitchard. The event will be at Mr. Lyons; for more information and tickets go to www.friendsofthepalmspringslibrary.org. For Modernism Week the Friends will have a William Cody self -guided exhibit at the Library. The exhibit will be open 10-4 daily from February 17th – 26th. On February 20th they will have a lecture and reception at the Library. 9. LEGISLATIVE ACTION 9. A. LED Informational Sign Update Construction on the LED Informational sign has started, they are working on the electrical. Library staff was trained on the display. Currently some of the landscaping spotlights are backordered. The sign should be completed by March. Board of Library Trustees Minutes: January 26, 2017 2 9. B. Sun Shade Update The steel for the Sun Shade is scheduled to be delivered the last week in January. 9. C. Welwood Patio Update No update at this time. 9. D. Library Remodel Update The Public Works Department is preparing spec documents to send to local architects. 9. E. Appoint Standing Committees: Advocacy, Budget, Buildings, and Policies The Advocacy Committee will consist of President Pro Tem Willison and Trustee Dunphy. The Buildings Committee will consist of Treasurer Futterer and President Pro Tem Willison. The Policies Committee will consist of Treasurer Futterer and President Pro Tem Willison. The Budget Committee will consist of President Courtright and Trustee McBride. The Welwood Committee will consist of President Pro Tem Willison and Trustee Dunphy. The Friends representative will be Trustee Dunphy. The Literacy Subcommittee consists of President Pro Tem Willison and Trustee Dunphy. 9. F. Appoint Main Library Remodel Ad Hoc Subcommittee President Courtright appointed himself and Trustee McBride to the Main Library Remodel Ad Hoc Subcommittee. 9. G. Donation for early literacy interactive panel purchase MOTION: (Willison/Dunphy, 4-0) To approve purchase of early literacy interactive panel. 9. H. Gift of $25,000 from Alexander Jablow and Grace Jablow Inter Vivos Revocable Trust MOTION: (Futterer/Dunphy, 4-0) To accept donation of $25,000 from the Alexander Jablow and Grace Jablow Inter Vivos Revocabe Trust. 9. I. Set date for Joint Organization meeting with Library Board, Friends, and Foundation Tentative date set for March 23, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. following the regular Board meeting. 10. REPORT FROM DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES: Library Director Kays gave the report.  May Meeting: Jeannie is a presenter at Neighborhoods USA annual conference in Omaha, NE. Board meeting conflict.  Deepwell Neighborhood Organization Meeting: Jeannie presenting “Accessing the Past” Saturday, January 21, 2017 at noon.  Star Wars Reads program: Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at 6 p.m. Over 300 attended. KESQ and KMIR filmed.  Youth Programs: After-school programs moving to Wednesday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. beginning in February.  Library Closed: February 20, 2017 for President’s Day. Board of Library Trustees Minutes: January 26, 2017 3  Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Art Exhibit: Now through February 11, 2017.  PS Mod Com Exhibit: February 13, 2017 through mid-March. Free.  William Cody Exhibit: $10 online/$15 at the door. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day of Modernism Week. Proceeds benefit Friends of the Palm Springs Library.  William Cody Lecture and Reception: Monday, February 20. $55.  Union Bank Bas Relief Art Lecture: David Gray hosting a lecture at Welwood. $20.  Automatic Renewals: The library started automatic book renewals. This should help some people avoid fines. 11. REPORT FROM LIBRARY FOUNDATION LIASON President Courtright reported that the Foundation held their kickoff press conference to announce the Library Foundation to the media and public. On February 8, 2017 they are hosting an event at Smoke Tree Ranch. The event will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a sit down dinner and the guest speaker will be former Senator Barbara Boxer. 12. TRUSTEE COMMENTS & REQUESTS President Pro Tem Willison suggested the Library Board purchase tickets for Library staff to attend Foundation event. This item became an Added Starter. MOTION: (Willison/Dunphy, 4-0) To approve up to $1,000 for purchase of tickets for staff. Treasurer Futterer asked about the scuffs on the floor of the Welwood. Director Kays said that the floor is supposed to look worn as was the vision of the Interior Designer. 13.
